καὶ τὸ μεταβάλλειν ἡδύ· εἰς φύσιν γὰρ γίγνεται τὸ μεταβάλλειν· τὸ γὰρ αὐτὸ ἀεὶ ὑπερβολὴν ποιεῖ τῆς καθεστώσης ἕξεως, ὅθεν εἴρηται μεταβολὴ πάντων γλυκύ. Eur. Orest. 234 διὰ τοῦτο γὰρ καὶ τὰ διὰ χρόνου ἡδέα ἐστίν, καὶ ἄνθρωποι καὶ πράγματα· μεταβολὴ γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ παρόντος ἐστίν, ἅμα δὲ καὶ σπάνιον τὸ διὰ χρόνου.

Change also is pleasant, since change is in the order of nature; for perpetual sameness creates an excess of the normal condition; whence it was said: Change in all things is sweet. This is why what we only see at intervals, whether men or things, is pleasant; for there is a change from the present, and at the same time it is rare.

Le changement aussi est agréable, puisqu'il est dans l'ordre de la nature; car une perpétuelle uniformité produit un excès de l'état normal. De là cette parole: Le changement en toutes choses est doux. Voilà pourquoi ce que nous ne voyons qu'à intervalles, qu'il s'agisse de personnes ou de choses, est agréable; car cela apporte un changement par rapport au présent et, en même temps, c'est rare.
