### Ancient Greek

καὶ τὰ ἀδικήματα ἀδικοῦσιν εἰς ὕβριν, οὐ κακουργίαν. καὶ ἐλεητικοὶ διὰ τὸ πάντας χρηστοὺς καὶ βελτίους ὑπολαμβάνειν (τῇ γὰρ αὑτῶν ἀκακίᾳ τοὺς πέλας μετροῦσιν, ὥστε ἀνάξια πάσχειν ὑπολαμβάνουσιν αὐτούς),

### English

If they do wrong, it is due to insolence, not to wickedness. And they are inclined to pity, because they think all men are virtuous and better than themselves ; for they measure their neighbors by their own inoffensiveness, so that they think that they suffer undeservedly.

S’ils font le mal, c’est par insolence, non par méchanceté. Ils sont enclins à la pitié, parce qu’ils croient tous les hommes vertueux et meilleurs qu’eux-mêmes. Car ils mesurent leurs voisins à leur propre innocuité, de sorte qu’ils pensent que ceux-ci souffrent sans l’avoir mérité.
