    "author": "Sigmund Freud",
    "date": "1905",
    "summary": "Freud reconstructs sexual development as a history of partial drives, changing objects, and successive organizations. The text belongs to a dated clinical theory whose terminology and generalizations require critical context.",

    "long_summary": "The three essays move sexuality beyond a model restricted to adult reproduction and address variation, infantile development, and transformations of puberty. Successive editions substantially revised the text, so it cannot be treated as an unchanging doctrine.\n\nReaders also encounter historically situated medical terminology and classifications. They must not be used to label a user or pathologize an orientation. The text illuminates the history of a theory; it supplies neither a contemporary verdict nor a total explanation of human conduct.",

            "text": "Das Fehlschlagen der Funktion des Sexualmechanismus durch die Schuld der Vorlust wird am ehesten vermieden, wenn das Primat der Genitalzonen gleichfalls bereits im infantilen Leben vorgezeichnet ist. Dazu scheinen die Anstalten wirklich in der zweiten Hälfte der Kinderzeit (von 8 Jahren bis zur Pubertät) getroffen zu sein. Die Genitalzonen benehmen sich in diesen Jahren bereits in ähnlicher Weise wie zur Zeit der Reife, sie werden der Sitz von Erregungssensationen und Bereitschaftsveränderungen, wenn irgendwelche Lust durch Befriedigung anderer erogener Zonen empfunden wird, obwohl dieser Effekt noch zwecklos bleibt, d. h. nichts dazu beiträgt, den Sexualvorgang fortzusetzen. Es entsteht also bereits in den Kinderjahren neben der Befriedigungslust ein gewisser Betrag von Sexualspannung, obwohl minder konstant und weniger ausgiebig, und nun können wir verstehen, warum wir bei der Erörterung der Quellen der Sexualität mit ebenso gutem Recht sagen konnten, der betreffende Vorgang wirke sexuell befriedigend, wie er wirke sexuell erregend. Wir merken, daß wir auf dem Wege zur Erkenntnis uns die Unterschiede des infantilen und des reifen Sexuallebens zunächst übertrieben groß vorgestellt haben, und tragen nun die Korrektur nach. Nicht nur die Abweichungen vom normalen Sexualleben, sondern auch die normale Gestaltung desselben wird durch die infantilen Äußerungen der Sexualität bestimmt.",

            "text": "Failure of the sexual mechanism’s function through the fault of fore-pleasure is most readily avoided if the primacy of the genital zones has likewise already been foreshadowed in infantile life. Preparations for this do in fact seem to be made in the second half of childhood (from the age of eight until puberty). During these years, the genital zones already behave in a manner similar to that at maturity. They become the seat of sensations of excitation and changes of readiness whenever any pleasure is felt through satisfaction of other erogenous zones, although this effect still remains without purpose, that is, it contributes nothing to the continuation of the sexual process. Thus, even during childhood, a certain amount of sexual tension arises alongside the pleasure of satisfaction, although less constantly and less abundantly. We can now understand why, in discussing the sources of sexuality, we were equally justified in saying that the process in question had a sexually satisfying effect and that it had a sexually exciting one. We notice that, on the path toward knowledge, we initially imagined the differences between infantile and mature sexual life to be exaggeratedly great, and we now supply the correction. Not only the deviations from normal sexual life, but also its normal form, are determined by the infantile manifestations of sexuality.",

            "text": "L’échec du fonctionnement du mécanisme sexuel par la faute du plaisir préliminaire est le plus aisément évité lorsque le primat des zones génitales est lui aussi déjà préfiguré dans la vie infantile. Il semble que les dispositions nécessaires soient effectivement prises dans la seconde moitié de l’enfance, de huit ans à la puberté. Durant ces années, les zones génitales se comportent déjà de manière analogue à ce qui se produit à l’âge de la maturité: elles deviennent le siège de sensations d’excitation et de modifications préparatoires lorsqu’un plaisir quelconque est éprouvé par la satisfaction d’autres zones érogènes, bien que cet effet demeure encore sans finalité, c’est-à-dire qu’il ne contribue en rien à poursuivre le processus sexuel. Il se forme donc dès les années de l’enfance, à côté du plaisir de satisfaction, une certaine quantité de tension sexuelle, quoique moins constante et moins abondante; nous pouvons maintenant comprendre pourquoi, lors de l’examen des sources de la sexualité, nous pouvions dire avec autant de raison que le processus concerné produisait une satisfaction sexuelle ou qu’il produisait une excitation sexuelle. Nous remarquons que, sur la voie de la connaissance, nous nous sommes d’abord représenté comme exagérément grandes les différences entre la vie sexuelle infantile et la vie sexuelle mature, et nous apportons maintenant la correction nécessaire. Non seulement les écarts par rapport à la vie sexuelle normale, mais aussi la configuration normale de celle-ci sont déterminés par les manifestations infantiles de la sexualité.",
