But I have been taught otherwise. I have had to recognize that here, once again, we have one of those not uncommon cases in which an ancient popular belief, tenaciously maintained, seems to have come closer to the truth of things than the judgment of the science accepted today. I must maintain that the dream really has a meaning and that a scientific procedure for interpreting dreams is possible. I arrived at knowledge of this procedure in the following way:

Psychical Preparation for Dream Interpretation.

For many years I have occupied myself, for therapeutic purposes, with resolving certain psychopathological formations, hysterical phobias, obsessive ideas, and others, ever since I learned from an important communication by Josef Breuer that, for these formations experienced as symptoms of illness, resolution and cure coincide (32). If one has succeeded in tracing such a pathological idea back to the elements from which it arose in the patient’s mental life, it has thereby disintegrated, and the patient has been freed from it. Given the impotence of our other therapeutic efforts and the enigmatic nature of these conditions, it appeared tempting to me, despite every difficulty, to follow the path taken by Breuer until a complete elucidation was reached. I shall have to report in detail elsewhere on the form ultimately taken by the technique of the procedure and on the results of the effort. In the course of these psychoanalytic studies, I came upon dream interpretation. The patients whom I had obliged to communicate to me every idea and thought that forced itself upon them in connection with a particular subject told me their dreams, and thus taught me that a dream may be inserted into the psychical chain that can be traced backward in memory from a pathological idea. It was then natural to treat the dream itself as a symptom and to apply to it the method of interpretation developed for symptoms.
