"date": "principal composition, 1898-1899; publication dated 1900",
"summary": "Freud treats the dream as a constructed psychical formation, not a message decoded through fixed symbols. He follows condensation, displacement, censorship, and wish-fulfilment from the manifest account toward hypothetical latent thoughts.",
"learning": "Distinguish manifest content from latent thoughts, recognize mechanisms of dream-work, and keep every interpretation at the level of a hypothesis.",
"long_summary": "The book combines a method of interpretation, dream analyses, an account of dream-work, and a theory of the psychical apparatus. An apparently trivial detail becomes evidence when the dreamer’s associations connect it to conflict or wish.\n\nThis later edition carries revisions accumulated since 1900. The German manifestation is the source; the project’s French and English texts are non-official, paraphrase-only translations. The book supplies a historical framework for inquiry, never a license to diagnose a reader or impose a certain meaning on a dream.",

"text": "On another occasion I had the opportunity to gain deep insight into the unconscious mental life of a young man who, rendered almost incapable of living by obsessional neurosis, could not go out into the street because he was tormented by the fear that he killed everyone who passed him. He spent his days keeping the evidence for his alibi in order, in case he should be charged with one of the murders committed in the city. It is needless to remark that he was as moral as he was highly cultivated. The analysis, which incidentally led to his recovery, uncovered as the basis of this painful obsession murderous impulses against his somewhat overly strict father, impulses that had consciously expressed themselves, to his astonishment, when he was seven years old, but naturally originated in much earlier years of childhood. After his father's agonizing illness and death, the obsessive self-reproach appeared in his thirty-first year and was displaced onto strangers in the form of that phobia. Anyone capable of wishing to push his own father from a mountain peak into the abyss may indeed be suspected of not sparing the lives of those more remote from him either; he is therefore right to shut himself up in his rooms.\n\nAccording to my already extensive experience, the parents play the principal role in the childhood mental life of all those who later become psychoneurotics, and being in love with one member of the parental pair and hating the other belong to the iron stock of psychical impulses formed at that time and so significant for the symptomatology of the later neurosis. I do not believe, however, that in this respect psychoneurotics are sharply distinguished from other children who remain normal, as though they were capable of creating something absolutely new and peculiar to themselves. It is far more probable, and is supported by occasional observations of normal children, that with these loving and hostile wishes toward their parents they merely make recognizable to us, through magnification, what takes place less distinctly and less intensely in the minds of most children. In support of this recognition, antiquity has handed down to us a legendary subject matter whose profound and universal effectiveness can be understood only through a similar universality of the premise from child psychology discussed here.\n\nThe Oedipus myth and its infantile root.",
