    "author": "Sigmund Freud",
    "date": "principal composition, 1898-1899; publication dated 1900",
    "summary": "Freud treats the dream as a constructed psychical formation, not a message decoded through fixed symbols. He follows condensation, displacement, censorship, and wish-fulfilment from the manifest account toward hypothetical latent thoughts.",
    "learning": "Distinguish manifest content from latent thoughts, recognize mechanisms of dream-work, and keep every interpretation at the level of a hypothesis.",
    "long_summary": "The book combines a method of interpretation, dream analyses, an account of dream-work, and a theory of the psychical apparatus. An apparently trivial detail becomes evidence when the dreamer’s associations connect it to conflict or wish.\n\nThis later edition carries revisions accumulated since 1900. The German manifestation is the source; the project’s French and English texts are non-official, paraphrase-only translations. The book supplies a historical framework for inquiry, never a license to diagnose a reader or impose a certain meaning on a dream.",

            "text": "Wenn man erwägt, daß von den aufgefundenen Traumgedanken nur die wenigsten durch eines ihrer Vorstellungselemente im Traume vertreten sind, so sollte man schließen, die Verdichtung geschehe auf dem Wege der Auslassung , indem der Traum nicht eine getreuliche Übersetzung oder eine Projektion Punkt für Punkt der Traumgedanken, sondern eine höchst unvollständige und lückenhafte Wiedergabe derselben sei. Diese Einsicht ist, wie wir bald finden werden, eine sehr mangelhafte. Doch fußen wir zunächst auf ihr und fragen uns weiter: Wenn nur wenige Elemente aus den Traumgedanken in den Trauminhalt gelangen, welche Bedingungen bestimmen die Auswahl derselben?\n\nUm hierüber Aufschluß zu bekommen, wendet man nun seine Aufmerksamkeit den Elementen des Trauminhaltes zu, welche die gesuchten Bedingungen ja erfüllt haben müssen. Ein Traum, zu dessen Bildung eine besonders starke Verdichtung beigetragen, wird für diese Untersuchung das günstigste Material sein. Ich wähle den auf p. 128 mitgeteilten Traum von der botanischen Monographie.\n\nTrauminhalt : Ich habe eine Monographie über eine (unbestimmt gelassene) Pflanzenart geschrieben. Das Buch liegt vor mir, ich blättere eben eine eingeschlagene farbige Tafel um. Dem Exemplar ist ein getrocknetes Spezimen der Pflanze beigebunden.\n\nDas augenfälligste Element dieses Traumes ist die botanische Monographie . Diese stammt aus den Eindrücken des Traumtages; in einem Schaufenster einer Buchhandlung hatte ich tatsächlich eine Monographie über die Gattung »Zyklamen« gesehen. Die Erwähnung dieser Gattung fehlt im Trauminhalt, in dem nur die Monographie und ihre Beziehung zur Botanik übrig geblieben sind. Die »botanische Monographie« erweist sofort ihre Beziehung zu der Arbeit über Kokain , die ich einmal geschrieben habe; vom Kokain aus geht die Gedankenverbindung einerseits zur Festschrift und zu gewissen Vorgängen in einem Universitätslaboratorium, anderseits zu meinem Freunde, dem Augenarzte Dr. Königstein , der an der Verwertung des Kokains seinen Anteil gehabt hat. An die Person des Dr. K. knüpft sich weiter die Erinnerung an das unterbrochene Gespräch, das ich abends zuvor mit ihm geführt, und die vielfältigen Gedanken über die Entlohnung ärztlicher Leistungen unter Kollegen. Dieses Gespräch ist nun der eigentliche aktuelle Traumerreger; die Monographie über Zyklamen ist gleichfalls eine Aktualität, aber indifferenter Natur; wie ich sehe, erweist sich die »botanische Monographie« des Traumes als ein mittleres Gemeinsames zwischen beiden Erlebnissen des Tages, von dem indifferenten Eindruck unverändert übernommen, mit dem psychisch bedeutsamen Erlebnis durch ausgiebigste Assoziationsverbindungen verknüpft.\n\nÜberdeterminierung der Traumelemente.",

            "text": "If one considers that only a very few of the dream-thoughts discovered are represented in the dream by one of their ideational elements, one might conclude that condensation takes place by way of omission, so that the dream is not a faithful translation or a point-by-point projection of the dream-thoughts, but a highly incomplete and fragmentary reproduction of them. This insight, as we shall soon find, is very inadequate. But let us begin by proceeding from it and ask further: If only a few elements from the dream-thoughts enter the dream-content, what conditions determine their selection?\n\nTo obtain information on this point, we now turn our attention to those elements of the dream-content that must have fulfilled the conditions we seek. A dream whose formation involved particularly powerful condensation will provide the most favorable material for this investigation. I choose the dream of the botanical monograph reported on p. 128.\n\nDream-content: I have written a monograph on a species of plant (left unspecified). The book lies before me; I am just turning over a folded color plate. A dried specimen of the plant is bound into the copy.\n\nThe most conspicuous element of this dream is the botanical monograph. It derives from the impressions of the dream-day; I had in fact seen a monograph on the genus “Cyclamen” in a bookshop window. The mention of this genus is absent from the dream-content, in which only the monograph and its relation to botany remain. The “botanical monograph” at once reveals its relation to the paper on cocaine that I once wrote; from cocaine the connection of thought leads on the one hand to the commemorative volume and to certain events in a university laboratory, and on the other to my friend, the ophthalmologist Dr. Königstein, who had played a part in the application of cocaine. The person of Dr. K. is further linked with the memory of the interrupted conversation I had conducted with him the previous evening, and with the manifold thoughts concerning the remuneration of medical services among colleagues. This conversation is the actual recent instigator of the dream; the monograph on cyclamen is likewise a recent event, but one of an indifferent nature. As I see it, the “botanical monograph” in the dream proves to be an intermediate common element between the two experiences of the day, taken over unchanged from the indifferent impression and linked with the psychically significant experience through the most extensive associative connections.\n\nOverdetermination of the dream-elements.",

            "text": "Si l’on considère que, parmi les pensées du rêve découvertes, seules quelques-unes sont représentées dans le rêve par l’un de leurs éléments de représentation, on devrait conclure que la condensation s’effectue par voie d’omission, le rêve n’étant pas une traduction fidèle ni une projection point par point des pensées du rêve, mais une restitution extrêmement incomplète et lacunaire de celles-ci. Cette conception est, comme nous le verrons bientôt, très insuffisante. Mais appuyons-nous d’abord sur elle et poursuivons notre questionnement : si seuls quelques éléments des pensées du rêve parviennent dans le contenu du rêve, quelles conditions déterminent leur sélection ?\n\nPour obtenir des éclaircissements à ce sujet, on porte alors son attention sur les éléments du contenu du rêve, qui doivent bien avoir rempli les conditions recherchées. Un rêve à la formation duquel une condensation particulièrement forte a contribué fournira le matériau le plus favorable à cette étude. Je choisis le rêve de la monographie botanique, communiqué p. 128.\n\nContenu du rêve : J’ai écrit une monographie sur une espèce végétale (laissée indéterminée). Le livre est devant moi, je suis précisément en train de tourner une planche en couleurs qui a été repliée. Un spécimen séché de la plante est relié à l’exemplaire.\n\nL’élément le plus frappant de ce rêve est la monographie botanique. Celle-ci provient des impressions du jour du rêve ; j’avais effectivement vu, dans la vitrine d’une librairie, une monographie sur le genre « cyclamen ». La mention de ce genre manque dans le contenu du rêve, où ne subsistent que la monographie et son rapport avec la botanique. La « monographie botanique » révèle aussitôt son rapport avec le travail sur la cocaïne que j’ai écrit autrefois ; de la cocaïne, la connexion de pensée conduit, d’une part, au volume commémoratif et à certains événements survenus dans un laboratoire universitaire, d’autre part, à mon ami, l’ophtalmologue Dr Königstein, qui avait pris part à l’utilisation de la cocaïne. À la personne du Dr K. se rattachent en outre le souvenir de la conversation interrompue que j’avais eue avec lui la veille au soir, ainsi que les multiples pensées relatives à la rémunération des services médicaux entre collègues. Cette conversation est donc le véritable instigateur actuel du rêve ; la monographie sur le cyclamen est elle aussi un élément d’actualité, mais de nature indifférente ; comme je le vois, la « monographie botanique » du rêve se révèle être un moyen terme commun entre les deux expériences de la journée : reprise sans modification de l’impression indifférente, elle est reliée à l’expérience psychiquement significative par les associations les plus nombreuses.\n\nSurdétermination des éléments du rêve.",
