    "author": "Sigmund Freud",
    "date": "principal composition, 1898-1899; publication dated 1900",
    "summary": "Freud treats the dream as a constructed psychical formation, not a message decoded through fixed symbols. He follows condensation, displacement, censorship, and wish-fulfilment from the manifest account toward hypothetical latent thoughts.",
    "learning": "Distinguish manifest content from latent thoughts, recognize mechanisms of dream-work, and keep every interpretation at the level of a hypothesis.",
    "long_summary": "The book combines a method of interpretation, dream analyses, an account of dream-work, and a theory of the psychical apparatus. An apparently trivial detail becomes evidence when the dreamer’s associations connect it to conflict or wish.\n\nThis later edition carries revisions accumulated since 1900. The German manifestation is the source; the project’s French and English texts are non-official, paraphrase-only translations. The book supplies a historical framework for inquiry, never a license to diagnose a reader or impose a certain meaning on a dream.",

            "text": "Ich kann mir eine Sammelperson auch auf andere Weise für die Traumverdichtung herstellen, indem ich aktuelle Züge zweier oder mehrerer Personen zu einem Traumbilde vereinige. Solcher Art ist der Dr. M. meines Traumes entstanden, er trägt den Namen des Dr. M., spricht und handelt wie er; seine leibliche Charakteristik und sein Leiden sind die einer anderen Person, meines ältesten Bruders; ein einziger Zug, das blasse Aussehen, ist doppelt determiniert, indem er in der Realität beiden Personen gemeinsam ist. Eine ähnliche Mischperson ist der Dr. R. meines Onkeltraumes. Hier aber ist das Traumbild noch auf andere Weise bereitet. Ich habe nicht Züge, die dem einen eigen sind, mit Zügen des anderen vereinigt und dafür das Erinnerungsbild jedes einen um gewisse Züge verkürzt, sondern ich habe das Verfahren eingeschlagen, nach welchem Galton seine Familienporträts erzeugt, nämlich beide Bilder aufeinander projiziert, wobei die gemeinsamen Züge verstärkt hervortreten, die nicht zusammenstimmenden einander auslöschen und im Bilde undeutlich werden. Im Onkeltraume hebt sich so als verstärkter Zug aus der zwei Personen gehörigen und darum verschwommenen Physiognomie der blonde Bart hervor, der überdies eine Anspielung auf meinen Vater und auf mich enthält, vermittelt durch die Beziehung zum Ergrauen.\n\nDie Herstellung von Sammel- und Mischpersonen ist eines der Hauptarbeitsmittel der Traumverdichtung. Es wird sich bald der Anlaß ergeben, sie in einem anderen Zusammenhange zu behandeln.\n\nDer Einfall »Dysenterie« im Injektionstraume ist gleichfalls mehrfach determiniert, einerseits durch den paraphrasischen Gleichklang mit Diphtherie, anderseits durch die Beziehung auf den von mir in den Orient geschickten Patienten, dessen Hysterie verkannt wird.\n\nAls ein interessanter Fall von Verdichtung erweist sich auch die Erwähnung von » Propylen « im Traume. In den Traumgedanken war nicht » Propylen «, sondern » Amylen « enthalten. Man könnte meinen, daß hier eine einfache Verschiebung bei der Traumbildung Platz gegriffen hat. So ist es auch, allein diese Verschiebung dient den Zwecken der Verdichtung, wie folgender Nachtrag zur Traumanalyse zeigt. Wenn meine Aufmerksamkeit bei dem Worte » Propylen « noch einen Moment haltmacht, so fällt mir der Gleichklang mit dem Worte » Propyläen « ein. Die Propyläen befinden sich aber nicht nur in Athen, sondern auch in München. In dieser Stadt habe ich ein Jahr vor dem Traume meinen damals schwerkranken Freund aufgesucht, dessen Erwähnung durch das bald auf Propylen folgende Trimethylamin des Traumes unverkennbar wird.",

            "text": "I can also construct a collective figure for dream-condensation in another way, by combining actual features of two or more persons into a single dream-image. This is how the Dr. M. of my dream came into being: He bears Dr. M.'s name and speaks and acts like him; his physical characteristics and his ailment belong to another person, my eldest brother; a single feature, his pale appearance, is doubly determined, since in reality it is common to both persons. Dr. R. in my uncle dream is a similar composite figure. Here, however, the dream-image has been prepared in yet another way. I did not combine features peculiar to one person with features of the other, thereby shortening the memory-image of each by certain features; instead, I adopted the procedure by which Galton produced his family portraits, namely by projecting both images upon one another, so that the common features stand out with greater emphasis, while those that do not correspond cancel one another out and become indistinct in the image. In the uncle dream, the blond beard thus emerges as an emphasized feature from the blurred physiognomy belonging to two persons; it also contains an allusion to my father and to myself, mediated by the relation to turning gray.\n\nThe construction of collective and composite figures is one of the chief instruments employed by dream-condensation. An occasion will soon arise to treat them in another context.\n\nThe association “dysentery” in the injection dream is likewise determined in several ways: on the one hand by its paraphasic consonance with diphtheria, and on the other by its relation to the patient I sent to the Orient, whose hysteria is misdiagnosed.\n\nThe mention of “propylene” in the dream also proves an interesting case of condensation. It was not “propylene” but “amylene” that was contained in the dream-thoughts. One might suppose that a simple displacement occurred here in the formation of the dream. That is indeed so, but this displacement serves the purposes of condensation, as the following addendum to the dream-analysis shows. If my attention lingers for another moment on the word “propylene,” the consonance with the word “Propylaea” occurs to me. But the Propylaea are located not only in Athens, but also in Munich. In that city, one year before the dream, I visited my friend, who was seriously ill at the time and whose mention is made unmistakable by the trimethylamine that follows shortly after propylene in the dream.",

            "text": "Je puis aussi former d’une autre manière une personne collective aux fins de la condensation onirique, en réunissant dans une seule image de rêve les traits actuels de deux personnes ou davantage. C’est ainsi qu’est né le Dr M. de mon rêve : il porte le nom du Dr M., parle et agit comme lui ; ses caractéristiques physiques et sa maladie sont celles d’une autre personne, mon frère aîné ; un seul trait, l’aspect pâle, est doublement déterminé, car il est commun aux deux personnes dans la réalité. Le Dr R. du rêve de mon oncle est une personne composite analogue. Mais ici, l’image du rêve a été élaborée d’une autre manière encore. Je n’ai pas réuni des traits propres à l’un avec des traits de l’autre en réduisant pour cela de certains traits l’image mnésique de chacun ; j’ai adopté le procédé par lequel Galton produisait ses portraits de famille, à savoir la projection des deux images l’une sur l’autre, les traits communs ressortant ainsi de façon renforcée, tandis que ceux qui ne concordent pas s’effacent réciproquement et deviennent indistincts dans l’image. Dans le rêve de l’oncle, la barbe blonde se détache ainsi comme un trait renforcé de la physionomie, floue parce qu’elle appartient à deux personnes ; elle contient en outre une allusion à mon père et à moi-même, par l’intermédiaire du rapport avec le grisonnement.\n\nLa formation de personnes collectives et composites est l’un des principaux moyens de travail de la condensation onirique. L’occasion se présentera bientôt de les traiter dans un autre contexte.\n\nL’idée incidente « dysenterie », dans le rêve de l’injection, est également déterminée à plusieurs reprises : d’une part par la ressemblance sonore paraphrasique avec diphtérie, d’autre part par le rapport avec le patient que j’ai envoyé en Orient et dont l’hystérie n’est pas reconnue.\n\nLa mention de « propylène » dans le rêve se révèle aussi un cas intéressant de condensation. Les pensées du rêve ne contenaient pas « propylène », mais « amylène ». On pourrait penser qu’un simple déplacement s’est produit ici lors de la formation du rêve. C’est bien le cas, mais ce déplacement sert les fins de la condensation, comme le montre l’ajout suivant à l’analyse du rêve. Si mon attention s’arrête encore un instant sur le mot « propylène », la ressemblance sonore avec le mot « Propylées » me vient à l’esprit. Or les Propylées ne se trouvent pas seulement à Athènes, mais aussi à Munich. Dans cette ville, un an avant le rêve, j’ai rendu visite à mon ami, alors gravement malade, auquel le triméthylamine du rêve, qui suit peu après le propylène, fait indubitablement référence.",
