An apparently trivial detail becomes evidence when the dreamer’s associations connect it to conflict or wish.\n\nThis later edition carries revisions accumulated since 1900. The German manifestation is the source; the project’s French and English texts are non-official, paraphrase-only translations. The book supplies a historical framework for inquiry, never a license to diagnose a reader or impose a certain meaning on a dream.",

So ähnlich entstand also auch mein Autodidasker .",

"text": "Now Autodidasker is easily divided into Autor, Autodidakt, and Lasker, with which the name Lassalle is associated. The first of these words lead to the occasion of the dream, which was significant this time. I had brought my wife several volumes by a well-known author who is a friend of my brother and who, as I have learned, comes from the same town as I do (J. J. David). One evening she spoke to me about the profound impression made upon her by the movingly sad story of a ruined talent in one of David's novellas, and our conversation then turned to the signs of giftedness we perceive in our own children. Under the influence of what she had just read, she expressed a concern relating to the children, and I comforted her with the observation that precisely such dangers could be averted by education. During the night my train of thought continued, took up my wife's concerns, and interwove all sorts of other things with them. A remark the writer had made to my brother concerning marriage showed my thoughts a side path that could lead to representation in the dream. This path led to Breslau, where a lady who was a very close friend of ours had married. For the concern about being ruined by a woman, which formed the core of my dream-thoughts, I found in Breslau the examples of Lasker and Lassalle, which at the same time allowed me to represent the two ways in which this influence could lead to disaster (106). The “Cherchez la femme” in which these thoughts can be summarized leads me, in another sense, to my still unmarried brother, whose name is Alexander. I now notice that Alex, as we abbreviate the name, sounds almost like a rearrangement of Lasker, and that this factor must have helped to send my thoughts on their detour through Breslau.\n\nThe play with names and syllables in which I am engaging here contains a further meaning, however. It represents the wish for a happy family life for my brother, by the following route. In the artist's novel L’oeuvre, which in subject matter must have lain close to my dream-thoughts, the writer, as is well known, also portrayed himself and his own domestic happiness in an episode, appearing under the name Sandoz. He probably arrived at the altered name by the following route. Zola reversed, as children are so fond of doing, gives Aloz. That was probably still too transparent for him; he therefore replaced the syllable Al, which also begins the name Alexander, with the third syllable of the same name, sand, and thus Sandoz came into being. My Autodidasker arose in much the same way.",
