"date": "principal composition, 1898-1899; publication dated 1900",
"summary": "Freud treats the dream as a constructed psychical formation, not a message decoded through fixed symbols. He follows condensation, displacement, censorship, and wish-fulfilment from the manifest account toward hypothetical latent thoughts.",
"learning": "Distinguish manifest content from latent thoughts, recognize mechanisms of dream-work, and keep every interpretation at the level of a hypothesis.",
"long_summary": "The book combines a method of interpretation, dream analyses, an account of dream-work, and a theory of the psychical apparatus. An apparently trivial detail becomes evidence when the dreamer’s associations connect it to conflict or wish.\n\nThis later edition carries revisions accumulated since 1900. The German manifestation is the source; the project’s French and English texts are non-official, paraphrase-only translations. The book supplies a historical framework for inquiry, never a license to diagnose a reader or impose a certain meaning on a dream.",

"text": "III.

"text": "III. In the example I shall now give, I can catch the dream-work in the act of deliberately manufacturing an absurdity for which there is no occasion at all in the material. It comes from the dream inspired by my encounter with Count Thun before my holiday journey. I am riding in a one-horse carriage and instruct the driver to go to a railway station. “Of course I cannot travel with you on the railway line itself,” I say, after he has raised an objection as though I had overtired him; at the same time, it is as though I had already traveled with him over a stretch that one usually covers by railway. Analysis provides the following elucidations of this confused and nonsensical story: during the day I had taken a one-horse carriage that was to convey me to a remote street in Dornbach. But the driver did not know the way and, in the manner of these good people, simply kept driving until I noticed and showed him the way, while not sparing him a few mocking remarks. From this driver a chain of thought extends to the aristocrats, which I shall encounter again later. For the moment, merely the suggestion that what strikes us bourgeois plebeians about the aristocracy is its fondness for taking the driver’s place. Count Thun, after all, also drives the Austrian coach of state. The next sentence in the dream, however, refers to my brother, whom I thus identify with the driver of the one-horse carriage. This year I had canceled our journey to Italy together (“I cannot travel with you on the railway line itself”), and this cancellation was a kind of punishment for his usual complaint that I tend to overtire him on these journeys (which enters the dream unchanged) by expecting him to change places too rapidly and to see too much beauty in a single day. My brother had accompanied me to the railway station that evening, but shortly beforehand had jumped out at the Westbahnhof station of the urban railway in order to travel to Purkersdorf by urban railway. I had remarked to him that he could remain with me a little longer by traveling to Purkersdorf not on the urban railway but on the Western Railway. From this, what entered the dream is that I traveled by carriage over a stretch that one usually covers by railway. In reality it was the reverse (and “the reverse was also traveled”); I had said to my brother: The stretch you travel by urban railway you can also travel in my company on the Western Railway. I create all the confusion in the dream by inserting “carriage” in place of “urban railway,” which admittedly serves very well to condense the driver and my brother into a single representation. I then obtain something nonsensical in the dream, something that seems scarcely capable of being disentangled by explanation and almost creates a contradiction with an earlier statement of mine (“I cannot travel with you on the railway line itself”). Since I have no need whatsoever to confuse the urban railway and the one-horse carriage, I must deliberately have shaped this entire enigmatic story in the dream in this way.",

"text": "III.
