If, therefore, it be evident, that something necessarily must exist from eternity, it is also as evident, that that something must necessarily be a cogitative being: for it is as impossible that incogitative matter should produce a cogitative being, as that nothing, or the negation of all being, should produce a positive being or matter.

Si donc il eſt évident, que quelque choſe doit néceſſairement exiſter de toute éternité, il ne l’eſt pas moins, que cette choſe doit être néceſſairement un Etre penſant. Car il eſt auſſi impoſſible que la Matiére non-penſante produiſe un Etre penſant, qu’il eſt impoſſible que le Néant ou l’abſence de tout Etre pût produire un Etre poſitif, ou la Matiére.
