"text": "Yet one should by all means replace this explanation, which I myself offer only doubtfully, with better explanations; for the origin of historical cultivation, and of its inwardly radical contradiction throughout with the spirit of a “new age,” of a “modern consciousness,” must itself once again be understood historically; history must solve the problem of history itself, knowledge must turn its sting against itself. This threefold must is the imperative of the spirit of the “new age,” provided that there really is something new, powerful, life-promising, and original within it. Or could it be true that we Germans, leaving the Romance peoples out of the discussion, must always be only “descendants” in all higher matters of culture, because this alone is what we could be, as Wilhelm Wackernagel once expressed in this proposition, which deserves very serious consideration: “We Germans are indeed a people of descendants; with all our higher knowledge, and even with our faith, we are always merely successors of the ancient world; even those who, being hostile to it, do not wish this, breathe unceasingly, alongside the spirit of Christianity, the immortal spirit of ancient classical cultivation, and if someone succeeded in separating these two elements from the vital air surrounding the inner human being, not much would remain with which to sustain a spiritual life.” Yet even if we wished gladly to content ourselves with this vocation of being descendants of antiquityErratum:antiquity read:antiquity According to KGW/KGB Nachberichte, if only we resolved to take it seriously, grandly, and with proper emphasis, and to recognize in this emphasis our distinguishing and sole prerogativeErratum:prerogative, read:prerogative According to KGW/KGB Nachberichte, we would nevertheless be compelled to ask whether it must eternally be our destiny to remain pupils of declining antiquity: at some point we may be permitted to set our goal gradually higher and farther away; at some point we ought to be entitled to praise ourselves for having recreated within ourselves the spirit of Alexandrian-Roman culture, through our universal history as well, so fruitfully and magnificently that we may now, as our noblest reward, set ourselves the still more tremendous task of striving back behind and beyond this Alexandrian world and of seeking our models with courageous gaze in the primordial ancient Greek world of the great, the natural, and the human. But there we also find the reality of a cultivation essentially unhistorical and, nevertheless, or rather for that very reason, unspeakably rich and full of life. Even if we Germans were nothing but descendants, by regarding such a cultivation as an inheritance to be appropriated by us, we could be nothing greater or prouder than descendants. By this, only this and nothing else is meant: that even the often painful-seeming thought of being epigones, when conceived greatly, can guarantee great effects and a hopeful desire for the future to an individual as well as to a people, insofar as we understand ourselves as heirs and descendants of classical and astonishing powers, and see in this our honour and our spur. Not, then, as faded and stunted latecomers of vigorous generations, eking out a shivering existence as the antiquarians and gravediggers of those generations. Such latecomers, to be sure, live an ironic existence: annihilation follows on the heels of their limping course of life; they shudder before it when they take pleasure in the past, for they are living memories, and yet their remembrance is meaningless without heirs. Thus they are enfolded by the gloomy intimation that their life is an injustice, since no life to come can vindicate it. But suppose we imagined such antiquarian latecomers suddenly exchanging that ironic and painful resignation for impudence; suppose we imagined them proclaiming in a shrill voice: the generation stands at its height, for only now has it attained knowledge of itself and become manifest to itself. We would then have a spectacle through which, as in a parable, the enigmatic significance of a certain very famous philosophy for German cultivation would be deciphered. I believe there has been no dangerous fluctuation or turn in German cultivation during this century that was not made more dangerous by the immense influence, still flowing onward to this very moment, of this philosophy, the Hegelian philosophy. The belief that one is a latecomer of the ages is truly paralysing and dispiriting: but it must appear terrible and destructive when such a belief one day, by a brazen inversion, deifies this latecomer as the true meaning and purpose of everything that previously happened, when his knowing misery is equated with a consummation of world history. Such a mode of contemplation has accustomed the Germans to speaking of the “world process” and to justifying their own age as the necessary result of this world process; such a mode of contemplation has installed history in place of the other spiritual powers, art and religion, as the sole sovereign, insofar as it is “the concept realizing itself,” insofarErratum:in so far read:insofar According to KGW/KGB Nachberichte as it is “the dialectic of national spirits” and the “judgement of the world.” This history understood in the Hegelian manner has mockingly been called God’s walking upon the earth, although this God, for his part, is created only through history. But this God became transparent and intelligible to himself within the Hegelian braincase and has already ascended through all the dialectically possible stages of his becoming, up to that self-revelation: so that for Hegel the high point and end point of the world process coincided in his own Berlin existence. Indeed, he would have had to say that all things coming after him should properly be valued merely as a musical coda to the rondo of world history, or, more properly still, as superfluous. He did not say this: instead, he planted in the generations leavened by him that admiration for the “power of history” which in practice turns at every moment into naked admiration of success and leads to idolatrous worship of the actual: for this worship people have now universally trained themselves to use the very mythological and, moreover, thoroughly German phrase “to take account of the facts.” But anyone who has first learned to bend his back and bow his head before the “power of history” ultimately nods his “Yes” to every power in a Chinese-mechanical fashion, whether that power is a government, a public opinion, or a numerical majority, and moves his limbs precisely to the rhythm in which some “power” pulls the string.",
