STRABON. XI 1, 6: φασὶ γοῦν ἐν Ῥόδωι γενόμενον τὸν Πομπήιον ἡνίκα ἐπὶ τὸν ληιστρικὸν πόλεμον ἐξῆλθεν (a. 66) ;εὐθὺς δ’ ἔμελλε καὶ ἐπὶ Μιθριδάτην ὁρμήσειν καὶ τὰ μέχρι τῆς Κασπίας ἔθνη;παρατυχεῖν διαλεγομένωι τῶι Ποσειδωνίωι, ἀπιόντα δ’ ἐρέσθαι, εἴ τι προστάττει, τὸν δ’ εἰπεῖν ‘αἰὲν ἀριστεύειν καὶ ὑπείροχον ἔμμεναι ἄλλων‘.

STRABO XI 1, 6: At any rate, they say that when Pompey was on Rhodes, at the time when he set out for the war against the pirates (66 BC), and was immediately thereafter about to march against Mithridates and the nations extending as far as the Caspian, he happened upon Posidonius while he was lecturing. As Pompey was leaving, he asked whether Posidonius had any command for him, and Posidonius said: “Always to excel and to be preeminent above others.”

STRABON XI 1, 6 : On dit du moins que, lorsque Pompée se trouva à Rhodes au moment où il partit pour la guerre contre les pirates (a. 66), et qu’il allait aussitôt marcher aussi contre Mithridate et les peuples établis jusqu’à la mer Caspienne, il assista par hasard à un entretien de Posidonius ; au moment de partir, il lui demanda s’il avait quelque recommandation à lui faire, et celui-ci répondit : « Toujours exceller et surpasser les autres. »
