ἢ τῷ τὰ αὐτὰ στοιχεῖα τυγχάνειν τῆς μουσικῆς καὶ 〈τῆς〉 τῶν κατὰ φιλοσοφίαν πραγμάτων εἰδήσεως, ὁποῖόν τι καὶ περὶ γραμ- ματικῆς ἀνώτερον (M I 300?) ἐλέγομεν· ἢ τῷ κατὰ ἁρμο- νίαν διοικεῖσθαι τὸν κόσμον, καθὼς φάσκουσι Πυθαγο- ρικῶν παῖδες, δέεσθαί τε ἡμᾶς τῶν μουσικῶν θεωρημά- των πρὸς τὴν τῶν ὅλων εἴδησιν, ἢ τῷ τὰ ποιὰ μέλη ἠθοποιεῖν τὴν ψυχήν.

or because music and the knowledge of philosophical matters happen to have the same elements, as we also said above concerning grammar (M 1.300?), or because the cosmos is governed according to harmony, as the sons of the Pythagoreans assert, and we need the theorems of music to know the universe, or because melodies of a particular kind form the soul’s character.

soit parce que la musique et la connaissance des matières philosophiques possèdent les mêmes éléments, comme nous le disions plus haut à propos de la grammaire (M I, 300 ?), soit parce que le monde est gouverné selon l’harmonie, comme l’affirment les disciples de Pythagore, et que nous avons besoin des théorèmes musicaux pour connaître l’univers, soit parce que certaines mélodies façonnent le caractère de l’âme.
