δῆλον δὲ καὶ ἐπὶ τίσι φθονοῦσι καὶ τίσι καὶ πῶς ἔχοντες, εἴπερ ἐστὶν ὁ φθόνος λύπη τις ἐπὶ εὐπραγίᾳ φαινομένῃ τῶν εἰρημένων ἀγαθῶν περὶ τοὺς ὁμοίους, μὴ ἵνα τι αὑτῷ, ἀλλὰ διʼ ἐκείνους· φθονήσουσι μὲν γὰρ οἱ τοιοῦτοι οἷς εἰσί τινες ὅμοιοι ἢ φαίνονται·

It is equally clear for what reason, and of whom, and in what frame of mind, men are envious, if envy is a kind of pain at the sight of good fortune in regard to the goods mentioned; in the case of those like themselves; and not for the sake of a man getting anything, but because of others possessing it. For those men will be envious who have, or seem to have, others like them.

On voit tout aussi clairement pour quelle raison, envers qui et dans quelle disposition d’esprit les hommes éprouvent de l’envie, si l’envie est une sorte de douleur ressentie à la vue de la bonne fortune relative aux biens mentionnés, lorsqu’elle échoit à des personnes semblables à eux ; non parce qu’ils veulent obtenir quelque chose eux-mêmes, mais parce que d’autres le possèdent. Seront donc envieux ceux qui ont, ou semblent avoir, des semblables.
