## Passage 39

### Anglais

"Do you see, then, how late eloquence came into the light even in the very city where it was born and nurtured? For before the age of Solon and Pisistratus, no one is recorded as having been eloquent. Yet if measured by the age of the Roman people, these men must be regarded as old, but if by the generations of Athens, as young. For although they flourished in the reign of Servius Tullius, Athens had already existed much longer than Rome has down to the present day. Still, I do not doubt that speech always possessed great power."
