## Passage section-0011

### Allemand

Apart from such a compressing force, which is of course unknown to us, we may describe the course of the formation of the witticism, and thus the technique of wit in this case, as a condensation with the formation of a substitute; in our example, the formation of a substitute consists in the production of a composite word. This composite word, “famillionairely,” unintelligible in itself but immediately understood in its context and recognized as meaningful, is now the bearer of the witticism’s compelling effect of laughter, although the mechanism of that effect has in no way been brought closer to us by uncovering the technique of wit. To what extent can a linguistic process of condensation, with the formation of a substitute by means of a composite word, afford us pleasure and compel us to laugh? We notice that this is another problem, whose treatment we may postpone until we have found an approach to it. For the present, we shall remain with the technique of wit.

Our expectation that the technique of wit cannot be immaterial to an understanding of its nature initially prompts us to investigate whether there are other examples of wit constructed like Heine’s “famillionairely.” There are not very many, but nevertheless enough to establish a small group characterized by the formation of composite words. Heine himself drew a second witticism from the word millionaire, copying himself, as it were, by speaking of a [p. 12] “millionairse” (Ideen, chap. XIV), which is a transparent contraction of millionaire and arse and, quite like the first example, gives expression to a suppressed subsidiary thought.

Other examples that have come to my attention are these: Berliners call a certain fountain in their city, whose construction brought much disfavor upon Lord Mayor Forckenbeck, the “Forckenbasin,” and wit cannot be denied to this designation, although the word “fountain” first had to be transformed into the unusual “basin” in order to coincide with the name in a common element. The malicious wit of Europe once rechristened a potentate from Leopold to Cleopold because of his relations at the time with a lady whose first name was Cléo, an unmistakable feat of condensation that, at the cost of a single letter, keeps an annoying allusion perpetually fresh. Proper names are in general easily subjected to this treatment by the technique of wit: In Vienna there were two brothers named Salinger, one of whom was a stock-exchange broker, or Sensal. This provided the means for calling one brother Sensalinger, while the unamiable designation Scheusalinger came into use for the other by way of distinction. It was convenient and certainly witty; I do not know whether it was justified. Wit does not usually inquire very closely into that.
