I, 1909 und weitere).

(53) In an appendix to his study of the “sexual feeling” (1903), Havelock Ellis presents a number of autobiographical reports by persons who later remained predominantly normal, concerning their first sexual impulses in childhood and the occasions that gave rise to them. These reports naturally suffer from the defect that they do not include the prehistoric earliest period of sexual life, concealed by infantile amnesia, which can be supplemented only through psychoanalysis in an individual who has become neurotic. Nevertheless, they are valuable in more than one respect, and inquiries of the same kind led me to the modification of my etiological assumptions mentioned in the text.
(54) In 1905 I was justified in making the assertions above concerning infantile sexuality essentially by the results of psychoanalytic investigation of adults. Direct observation of the child could not then be used to its full extent and had yielded only isolated indications and valuable confirmations. Since then, the analysis of individual cases of nervous illness in very young children has made it possible to gain direct insight into infantile psychosexuality (Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen, vol. I, 1909, and subsequent volumes). I can point out with satisfaction that direct observation has fully confirmed the conclusions drawn from psychoanalysis and has thus borne good witness to the reliability of this latter method of research.
The “Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy” (Jahrbuch, vol. I) moreover taught us much that was new and for which psychoanalysis had not prepared us, for example that sexual symbolism, the representation of the sexual by nonsexual objects and relations, extends back into these first years of the mastery of language. Furthermore, my attention was drawn to a defect in the account above, which, in the interests of clarity, describes the conceptual distinction between the two phases of auto-erotism and object-love as though it were also a temporal separation. From the analyses cited (as well as from Bell’s reports mentioned above), however, one learns that children between the ages of three and five are capable of a very distinct object-choice accompanied by strong affects.
(55) One is justified in speaking of a castration complex in women as well. Both male and female children construct the theory that women originally had a penis too, which was lost through castration. The conviction finally attained that women possess no penis often leaves the male individual with a lasting contempt for the other sex.

I, 1909 et suivants).
