Analysis supplies the following material. The indifferent occasion for the dream was a sentence from her English exercise: The mane is the ornament of the lion. Her father wore a beard of that kind, framing his face like a mane. Her English teacher is called Miss Lyons (lions). An acquaintance sent her the ballads of Loewe. These, then, are the three lions; why should she be afraid of them? She had read a story in which a Negro who had incited the others to revolt was hunted with bloodhounds and climbed a tree to save himself. Then, in the most exuberant mood, there follow fragments of memory such as these: the instructions for catching lions from Fliegende Blätter: take a desert and pass it through a sieve, and the lions will be left behind. Then there is the extremely amusing, though not very decent, anecdote about an official who is asked why he does not make greater efforts to win his superior's favour, and who replies that he had indeed tried to crawl up in there, but the man ahead of him was already on top. All the material becomes intelligible when one learns that on the day of the dream the lady had received a visit from her husband's superior. He was very courteous to her, kissed her hand, and she was not at all afraid of him, although he is a very "big beast" and plays the role of a "social lion" in the capital of her country. This lion is therefore comparable to the lion in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which unmasks itself as Snug the joiner; and such are all dream-lions of which one is not afraid.
II. As a second example I cite the dream of the girl who saw her sister's little son lying dead in a coffin, but who, as I now add, felt no pain or grief. We know from the analysis why she did not. The dream merely concealed her wish to see the man she loved again; the affect had to be attuned to the wish, not to its disguise. There was therefore no occasion for grief.
In a number of dreams, the affect at least remains connected with the ideational content that has replaced the one appropriate to it. In others, the loosening of the complex proceeds further. The affect appears completely detached from the idea belonging to it and is accommodated elsewhere in the dream, where it fits into the new arrangement of the dream-elements. The situation is then similar to what we learned in the case of acts of judgment in dreams. If a significant inference occurs in the dream-thoughts, the dream also contains one; but the inference in the dream may have been displaced onto entirely different material. Not infrequently, this displacement follows the principle of opposition.
