## Passage section-0490

### Allemand

### Anglais

For the hallucinations of hysteria and paranoia, and the visions of mentally normal persons, I can offer the explanation that they do in fact correspond to regressions, that is, that they are thoughts transformed into images, and that only thoughts intimately connected with suppressed memories or memories that have remained unconscious undergo this transformation. For example, one of my youngest hysterical patients, a twelve-year-old boy, is prevented from falling asleep by “green faces with red eyes,” which fill him with horror. The source of this phenomenon is the suppressed, though once conscious, memory of a boy whom he often saw four years earlier and who presented him with a repellent picture of many childish misdeeds, including masturbation, for which he now reproaches himself retrospectively. His mother had remarked at the time that the naughty boy had a greenish complexion and red eyes (that is, eyes rimmed with red). Hence the terrifying specter, which, moreover, is intended only to remind him of another prediction made by his mother: that such boys become feeble-minded, can learn nothing at school, and die young. Our little patient fulfills one part of the prophecy; he makes no progress at the Gymnasium and, as the examination of his involuntary ideas shows, is terribly afraid of the second part. After a short time, however, the treatment has the result that he sleeps, loses his anxiety, and finishes his school year with a report of distinction.
