## Passage section-0524

### Allemand

### Anglais

A twenty-seven-year-old man, who has been seriously ill for a year, repeatedly dreamed between the ages of eleven and thirteen, with severe anxiety, that a man with a hatchet was pursuing him. He wanted to run, but was as though paralyzed and could not move from the spot. This is surely a good specimen of a very commonplace anxiety-dream that is unsuspected of any sexual significance. In the analysis, the dreamer first thought of an account, dating from a later period, in which his uncle said that he had been attacked in the street at night by a suspicious individual; from this association he himself concluded that, at the time of the dream, he might have heard of a similar experience. In connection with the hatchet, he remembered that once, during that period of his life, he had injured his hand with a hatchet while chopping wood. He then came abruptly to his relationship with his younger brother, whom he used to maltreat and knock down. He remembered in particular one occasion when he struck him on the head with his boot, making him bleed, whereupon his mother remarked: I am afraid he will kill him one day. While he thus seemed fixed upon the subject of violence, a memory from his ninth year suddenly emerged. His parents had come home late and gone to bed while he pretended to be asleep. He then heard panting and other noises that struck him as uncanny, and he could also make out the position of the two of them in bed. His further thoughts showed that he had established an analogy between this relation of his parents and his relation to his younger brother. He subsumed what occurred between his parents under the concept of violence and fighting, and thus arrived, as children very often do, at a sadistic conception of the act of coitus. The fact that he had often noticed blood in his mother’s bed served him as evidence for this conception.

That the sexual intercourse of adults appears uncanny to children who notice it and arouses anxiety in them is, I would say, a finding of daily experience. I have explained this anxiety by saying that it is a matter of sexual excitation which their understanding cannot master, which also probably meets with rejection because their parents are involved in it, and which is therefore transformed into anxiety. At an even earlier period of life, the sexual impulse toward the parent of the opposite sex has not yet encountered repression and expresses itself freely, as we have heard (p. 194).
