Die Traumdeutung aber ist die Via regia zur Kenntnis des Unbewußten im Seelenleben.

Indem wir der Analyse des Traumes folgen, bekommen wir ein Stück weit Einsicht in die Zusammensetzung dieses allerwunderbarsten und allergeheimnisvollsten Instrumentes, freilich nur ein kleines Stück weit, aber es ist damit der Anfang gemacht, um von anderen – pathologisch zu heißenden – Bildungen her weiter in die Zerlegung desselben vorzudringen. Denn die Krankheit – wenigstens die mit Recht funktionell genannte – hat nicht die Zertrümmerung dieses Apparates, die Herstellung neuer Spaltungen in seinem Innern zur Voraussetzung; sie ist dynamisch aufzuklären durch Stärkung und Schwächung der Komponenten des Kräftespiels, von dem so viele Wirkungen während der normalen Funktion verdeckt sind. An anderer Stelle könnte noch gezeigt werden, wie die Zusammensetzung des Apparates aus den beiden Instanzen eine Verfeinerung auch der normalen Leistung gestattet, die einer einzigen unmöglich wäre (246) .

The interpretation of dreams, however, is the via regia to knowledge of the unconscious in mental life.

By following the analysis of dreams, we gain some insight into the composition of this most marvellous and most mysterious of all instruments. Admittedly, it is only a little way, but a beginning has thereby been made from which we may proceed, through other formations that must be called pathological, further into its dissection. For illness, at least that which is rightly called functional, does not presuppose the shattering of this apparatus or the establishment of new cleavages within it. It is to be explained dynamically through the strengthening and weakening of the components in the interplay of forces, so many of whose effects are concealed during normal functioning. Elsewhere it might also be shown how the composition of the apparatus from the two agencies permits a refinement even of normal functioning that would be impossible for a single agency (246).

En suivant l’analyse du rêve, nous acquérons, jusqu’à un certain point, un aperçu de la composition de cet instrument, le plus merveilleux et le plus mystérieux de tous. Ce n’est certes qu’un aperçu très restreint, mais un commencement est ainsi posé pour poursuivre, à partir d’autres formations, qu’il faut qualifier de pathologiques, la décomposition de cet instrument. Car la maladie, du moins celle que l’on qualifie à juste titre de fonctionnelle, ne suppose ni la destruction de cet appareil ni la création de nouvelles divisions en son sein ; elle doit être expliquée dynamiquement par le renforcement et l’affaiblissement des composantes du jeu de forces dont tant d’effets demeurent cachés durant le fonctionnement normal. On pourrait encore montrer ailleurs comment la composition de l’appareil à partir de deux instances permet également un perfectionnement du fonctionnement normal qui serait impossible à une instance unique (246).
