Nevertheless, I consider it expedient and legitimate to continue using the graphic representation of the two systems. We shall avoid any misuse of this mode of presentation if we remember that ideas, thoughts, and psychical formations in general must not be localized in organic elements of the nervous system, but, so to speak, between them, where resistances and facilitations form their corresponding correlate. Everything that can become an object of our internal perception is virtual, like the image in a telescope produced by the passage of light rays. But we are entitled to assume the systems, which are themselves nothing psychical and are never accessible to our psychical perception, like the lenses of the telescope that project the image. To continue this simile, the censorship between two systems would correspond to the refraction of rays as they pass into a new medium.

The Overvaluation of Consciousness.
