## Passage section-0582

### Allemand

(29) Artemidorus of Daldis, probably born at the beginning of the second century of our era, has transmitted to us the most complete and careful treatment of dream-interpretation in the Greco-Roman world. As Th. Gomperz emphasizes, he attached importance to grounding the interpretation of dreams in observation and experience, and strictly distinguished his art from other, deceptive arts. According to Gomperz’s account, the principle of his interpretive art is identical with that of magic: the principle of association. A thing in a dream signifies whatever it calls to mind. To be clear, whatever it calls to the dream-interpreter’s mind! An uncontrollable source of arbitrariness and uncertainty then arises from the fact that the dream-element may remind the interpreter of various things, and may remind each person of something different. The technique I shall set out below differs from the ancient one in a single essential respect: it imposes the work of interpretation upon the dreamer himself. It seeks to consider not what occurs to the dream-interpreter, but what occurs to the dreamer in connection with the particular element of the dream. According to more recent reports by the missionary Tfinkdji (Anthropos 1913), however, the modern dream-interpreters of the East also make extensive use of the dreamer’s cooperation. The informant relates of the dream-interpreters among the Mesopotamian Arabs: “To interpret a dream accurately, the most skilful oneiromancers ask those who consult them about all the circumstances they regard as necessary for a sound explanation. . . . . . . In a word, our oneiromancers allow no circumstance to escape them and do not give the desired interpretation until they have fully grasped the matter and received answers to all the desirable questions.” These questions regularly include requests for precise information about the closest family members (parents, wife, children), as well as the typical formula: Did you have conjugal intercourse on this night before or after the dream? “The dominant idea in the interpretation of dreams consists in explaining the dream by its opposite.”
