Thus science requires a higher supervision and oversight. A doctrine of the health of life takes its place immediately beside science, and one proposition of this doctrine of health would run precisely as follows: the unhistorical and the suprahistorical are the natural antidotes to the overgrowth of life by the historical, to the historical sickness. It is probable that we, the historically sick, will also suffer from the antidotes. But the fact that we suffer from them is no evidence against the correctness of the chosen treatment. And here I recognize the mission of that youth, that first generation of fighters and slayers of serpents, which marches in advance of a happier and more beautiful education and humanity without possessing more of this future happiness and eventual beauty than a promising intimation. This youth will suffer simultaneously from the evil and from the antidotes, and yet it believes itself entitled to boast of more vigorous health and, in general, a more natural nature than its preceding generations, the educated “men” and “old men” of the present. Its mission, however, is to shake the concepts of “health” and “education” held by that present, and to arouse scorn and hatred against such hybrid conceptual monsters. And the sign guaranteeing its own more vigorous health is to be precisely this: that this youth itself can use no concept, no party slogan from the current verbal and conceptual coinage of the present to designate its nature, but is persuaded only by a power active within it that fights, separates, and divides, and by an ever-heightened feeling of life in every good hour. It may be disputed that this youth already possesses education, but for what youth would this be a reproach? It may be accused of crudityErratum:crudity read:crudity According to KGW/KGB Subsequent Reports and immoderation, but it is not yet old and wise enough to be modest. Above all, however, it has no need to feign and defend a finished education, and it enjoys all the consolations and privileges of youth, especially the privilege of courageous, imprudent honesty and the inspiring consolation of hope. Of these hopeful ones I know that they will all understand these generalities at close quarters and translate them through their most personal experience into a teaching meant personally for them. For the time being, the others may perceive nothing but covered dishes, which may well be empty, until one day they see, surprised and with their own eyes, that the dishes are full and that attacks, demands, impulses of life, and passions lay nested and compressed within these generalities, things that could not remain covered in this way for long. Referring these doubters to time, which brings everything to light, I turn at the close to that society of hopeful ones, in order to tell them by means of a parable the course and progress of their healing, of their deliverance from the historical sickness, and therefore their own history up to the point at which they will once again be healthy enough to practice history anew and to employ the past under the rule of life, in that threefold sense, namely monumentally, antiquarianly, or critically. At that point they will be more ignorant than the “educated” people of the present, for they will have unlearned much and will even have lost all desire to look at all toward what those educated people chiefly want to know. Their distinguishing marks, viewed from the field of vision of those educated people, are precisely their “lack of education,” their indifference and reserve toward much that is famous, even toward some things that are good. But at that final point in their healing, they will have become human beings again and ceased to be human-like aggregates. That is something! Does your heart not laugh at this, you hopeful ones? And how do we reach that goal? you will ask. At the very beginning of your journey toward that goal, the Delphic god calls his maxim to you: “Know thyself.” It is a difficult maxim, for that god “neither conceals nor declares, but only indicates,” as Heraclitus said. What does he indicate to you?

There were centuries in which the Greeks found themselves in a danger similar to ours, namely that of perishing through inundation by the foreign and the past, by “history.” They never lived in proud inviolateness. Their “education,” rather, was for a long time a chaos of foreign, Semitic, Babylonian, Lydian, and Egyptian forms and concepts, and their religion a veritable battle of the gods of the entire Orient, somewhat as “German education” and religion are now an internally warring chaos of the whole foreign world and the whole past. And yet Hellenic culture did not become an aggregate, thanks to that Apollonian maxim. The Greeks gradually learned to organize the chaos by reflecting, in accordance with the Delphic teaching, upon themselves, that is, upon their genuine needs, and letting the apparent needs die away. Thus they took possession of themselves again. They did not long remain the overburdened heirs and epigones of the entire Orient. After an arduous struggle with themselves, through the practical interpretation of that maxim, they themselves became the happiest enrichers and augmenters of the inherited treasure, and the first fruits and models of every future cultured people.

This is a parable for every individual among us: he must organize the chaos within himself by reflecting upon his genuine needs. His honesty, his capable and truthful character, must at some point resist the fact that people merely repeat, relearn, and imitate. He then begins to understand that culture can be something other than the decoration of life, which at bottom is always only dissimulation and concealment, for every ornament hides that which is ornamented. Thus the Greek concept of culture is unveiled to him, in contrast to the Romance concept: the concept of culture as a new and improved physis, without inner and outer, without dissimulation and convention; culture as a concord between living, thinking, appearing, and willing. Thus he learns from his own experience that it was the higher power of moral nature through which the Greeks succeeded in triumphing over all other cultures, and that every increase in truthfulness must also be a preparatory advancement of true education, even if this truthfulness may on occasion seriously harm the cultivated refinement presently held in esteem, and may itself help bring about the downfall of an entire decorative culture.
