L’Interprétation des rêves Section section-0260

Ich gehe über den auffälligen Umstand hinweg, daß hier und anderswo bei der Traumanalyse Assoziationen von der verschiedensten Wertigkeit, wie gleichwertig, zur Gedankenverbindung benutzt werden, und gebe der Versuchung nach, mir den Vorgang bei der Ersetzung von Amylen in den Traumgedanken durch Propylen in dem Trauminhalt gleichsam plastisch vorzustellen.

Hier befinde sich die Vorstellungsgruppe meines Freundes Otto, der mich nicht versteht, mir unrecht gibt und mir nach Amylen duftenden Likör schenkt; dort durch Gegensatz verbunden die meines Freundes Wilhelm, der mich versteht, mir recht geben würde, und dem ich so viel wertvolle Mitteilungen, auch über die Chemie der Sexualvorgänge, verdanke.

Was aus der Gruppe Otto meine Aufmerksamkeit besonders erregen soll, ist durch die rezenten, den Traum erregenden Anlässe bestimmt; das Amylen gehört zu diesen ausgezeichneten, für den Trauminhalt prädestinierten Elementen. Die reiche Vorstellungsgruppe »Wilhelm« wird geradezu durch den Gegensatz zu Otto belebt und die Elemente in ihr hervorgehoben, welche an die bereits erregten in Otto anklingen. In diesem ganzen Traume rekurriere ich ja von einer Person, die mein Mißfallen erregt, auf eine andere, die ich ihr nach Wunsch entgegenstellen kann, rufe ich Zug für Zug den Freund gegen den Widersacher auf. So erweckt das Amylen bei Otto auch in der anderen Gruppe Erinnerungen aus dem Kreise der Chemie; das Trimethylamin, von mehreren Seiten her unterstützt, gelangt in den Trauminhalt. Auch » Amylen « könnte unverwandelt in den Trauminhalt kommen, es unterliegt aber der Einwirkung der Gruppe »Wilhelm«, indem aus dem ganzen Erinnerungsumfang, den dieser Name deckt, ein Element hervorgesucht wird, welches eine doppelte Determinierung für Amylen ergeben kann. In der Nähe von Amylen liegt für die Assoziation » Propylen «; aus dem Kreise »Wilhelm« kommt ihm München mit den Propyläen entgegen. In Propylen-Propyläen treffen beide Vorstellungskreise zusammen. Wie durch einen Kompromiß gelangt dieses mittlere Element dann in den Trauminhalt. Es ist hier ein mittleres Gemeinsames geschaffen worden, welches mehrfache Determinierung zuläßt. Wir greifen so mit Händen, daß die mehrfache Determinierung das Durchdringen in den Trauminhalt erleichtern muß. Zum Zwecke dieser Mittelbildung ist unbedenklich eine Verschiebung der Aufmerksamkeit von dem eigentlich Gemeinten zu einem in der Assoziation nahe Liegenden vorgenommen worden.

I shall pass over the striking circumstance that here, as elsewhere in dream analysis, associations of the most varied value are used as though they were equivalent in forming connections between thoughts, and yield to the temptation to picture to myself, as it were in concrete form, the process by which amylene in the dream-thoughts is replaced by propylene in the dream-content.

Here is the group of ideas concerning my friend Otto, who does not understand me, considers me in the wrong, and gives me liqueur smelling of amylene; there, connected with it by contrast, is the group concerning my friend Wilhelm, who understands me, would consider me in the right, and to whom I owe so many valuable communications, including some on the chemistry of the sexual processes.

What in the Otto group is particularly to attract my attention is determined by the recent occasions that prompted the dream; amylene belongs among these distinguished elements, predestined for the dream-content. The rich group of ideas called “Wilhelm” is positively enlivened by its contrast with Otto, and those elements within it are emphasized which echo elements already activated in the Otto group. Throughout this dream, after all, I recur from one person who arouses my displeasure to another whom I can set against him as I wish; feature by feature, I summon the friend against the adversary. Thus the amylene associated with Otto also awakens memories from the field of chemistry in the other group; trimethylamine, supported from several directions, makes its way into the dream-content. “Amylene” too could have entered the dream-content unchanged, but it comes under the influence of the “Wilhelm” group, in that an element is selected from the whole range of memories covered by this name that can provide a double determination for amylene. “Propylene” lies close to amylene by association; from the “Wilhelm” circle, Munich with its Propylaea comes to meet it. The two circles of ideas converge in propylene-Propylaea. As if through a compromise, this intermediate element then enters the dream-content. Here an intermediate common element has been created that permits multiple determination. We can thus grasp tangibly that multiple determination must facilitate entry into the dream-content. For the purpose of constructing this intermediate element, attention has been shifted without hesitation from what is actually meant to something lying close to it in association.

Je passe sur ce fait frappant qu’ici comme ailleurs, dans l’analyse du rêve, des associations de valeurs très diverses sont employées comme si elles étaient équivalentes pour relier les pensées, et je cède à la tentation de me représenter pour ainsi dire plastiquement le processus par lequel l’amylène des pensées du rêve est remplacé par le propylène dans le contenu du rêve.

Ici se trouverait le groupe de représentations de mon ami Otto, qui ne me comprend pas, me donne tort et m’offre une liqueur sentant l’amylène. Là, relié au premier par contraste, celui de mon ami Wilhelm, qui me comprend, me donnerait raison et auquel je dois tant de communications précieuses, notamment sur la chimie des processus sexuels.

Ce qui, dans le groupe Otto, doit particulièrement attirer mon attention est déterminé par les occasions récentes qui ont suscité le rêve. L’amylène appartient à ces éléments privilégiés, prédestinés à entrer dans le contenu du rêve. Le riche groupe de représentations « Wilhelm » est précisément animé par son opposition à Otto, et les éléments qui y font écho à ceux déjà excités dans Otto sont mis en relief. Dans tout ce rêve, je remonte en effet d’une personne qui suscite mon déplaisir à une autre que je peux, conformément à mon souhait, lui opposer, et j’appelle trait pour trait l’ami contre l’adversaire. Ainsi, l’amylène chez Otto éveille également, dans l’autre groupe, des souvenirs appartenant au domaine de la chimie. La triméthylamine, soutenue de plusieurs côtés, parvient dans le contenu du rêve. « Amylène » aurait aussi pu y entrer sans transformation, mais il subit l’influence du groupe « Wilhelm » : dans tout l’ensemble de souvenirs que recouvre ce nom, un élément est choisi qui peut fournir une double détermination de l’amylène. Pour l’association, « propylène » se trouve à proximité d’amylène. Du cercle « Wilhelm », Munich vient à sa rencontre avec les Propylées. Les deux cercles de représentations se rejoignent dans propylène-Propylées. Comme par un compromis, cet élément intermédiaire parvient alors dans le contenu du rêve. Un moyen terme commun a été créé ici, qui permet une détermination multiple. Nous saisissons ainsi de façon presque tangible que la détermination multiple doit faciliter la pénétration dans le contenu du rêve. Pour produire ce moyen terme, on n’a pas hésité à déplacer l’attention de ce qui était véritablement visé vers un élément associativement voisin.
