III. Ein anderes Beispiel führt uns die Rechenkunst des Traumes vor, die ihm soviel Mißachtung eingetragen hat. Ein Mann träumt: Er sitzt bei B. . (einer Familie seiner früheren Bekanntschaft) und sagt: Es war ein Unsinn, daß Sie mir die Mali nicht gegeben haben. Darauf fragt er das Mädchen: Wie alt sind Sie denn? Antwort: Ich bin 1882 geboren. – Ah, dann sind Sie 28 Jahre alt.

Da der Traum im Jahre 1898 vorfällt, so ist das offenbar schlecht gerechnet, und die Rechenschwäche des Träumers darf der des Paralytikers an die Seite gestellt werden, wenn sie sich etwa nicht anders aufklären läßt. Mein Patient gehörte zu jenen Personen, deren Gedanken kein Frauenzimmer, das sie sehen, in Ruhe lassen können. Seine Nachfolgerin in meinem Ordinationszimmer war einige Monate hindurch regelmäßig eine junge Dame, der er begegnete, nach der er sich häufig erkundigte, und mit der er durchaus höflich sein wollte. Diese war es, deren Alter er auf 28 Jahre schätzte. Soviel zur Aufklärung des Resultates der scheinbaren Rechnung. 1882 war aber das Jahr, in dem er geheiratet hatte. Er hatte es nicht unterlassen können, auch mit den beiden anderen weiblichen Personen, die er bei mir traf, Gespräche anzuknüpfen, den beiden keineswegs jugendlichen Mädchen, die ihm abwechselnd die Tür zu öffnen pflegten, und als er die Mädchen wenig zutraulich fand, sich die Erklärung gegeben, sie hielten ihn wohl für einen älteren » gesetzten « Herrn.

Rechnen und Reden im Traum.

IV. Einen anderen Zahlentraum, der durch durchsichtige Determinierung oder vielmehr Überdeterminierung ausgezeichnet ist, verdanke ich mitsamt seiner Deutung Herrn B. Dattner :

»Mein Hausherr, Sicherheitswachmann in Magistratsdiensten, träumt, er stünde auf der Straße Posten, was eine Wunscherfüllung ist. Da kommt ein Inspektor auf ihn zu, der auf dem Ringkragen die Nummer 22 und 62 oder 26 trägt. Jedenfalls aber seien mehrere Zweier draufgewesen. Schon die Zerteilung der Zahl 2262 bei der Wiedergabe des Traumes läßt darauf schließen, daß die Bestandteile eine gesonderte Bedeutung haben. Sie hätten gestern im Amt über die Dauer ihrer Dienstzeit gesprochen, fällt ihm ein. Ursache gab ein Inspektor, der mit 62 Jahren in Pension gegangen sei. Der Träumer hat erst 22 Dienstjahre und braucht noch 2 Jahre 2 Monate, um eine 90%ige Pension zu erreichen. Der Traum spiegelt ihm nun zuerst die Erfüllung eines langgehegten Wunsches, den Inspektorsrang, vor. Der Vorgesetzte mit der 2262 auf dem Kragen ist er selbst, er versieht seinen Dienst auf der Straße, auch ein Lieblingswunsch, hat seine 2 Jahre und 2 Monate abgedient und kann nun wie der 62 jährige Inspektor mit voller Pension aus dem Amte scheiden (160) .«

III. Another example shows us the dream’s skill in arithmetic, which has brought it so much contempt. A man dreams: He is sitting with the B. family (a family of his former acquaintance) and says: It was nonsense that you did not give me Mali. Then he asks the girl: How old are you? Answer: I was born in 1882. Ah, then you are 28 years old.

Since the dream takes place in 1898, this is obviously bad arithmetic, and the dreamer’s weakness in calculation may be placed alongside that of the paralytic unless it can perhaps be elucidated in another way. My patient belonged to those persons whose thoughts cannot leave any woman they see in peace. For several months, the patient who regularly followed him in my consulting room was a young lady whom he encountered, about whom he frequently made inquiries, and toward whom he was determined to be polite. It was she whose age he estimated at 28. So much for elucidating the result of the apparent calculation. But 1882 was the year in which he had married. He had also been unable to refrain from entering into conversation with the two other female persons he encountered at my office, the two by no means youthful girls who used alternately to open the door for him; and when he found the girls not very forthcoming, he explained it to himself by supposing that they probably regarded him as an older, “settled” gentleman.

Calculation and Speech in Dreams.

IV. I owe another numerical dream, distinguished by transparent determination, or rather overdetermination, together with its interpretation, to Mr. B. Dattner:

“My landlord, a member of the security police in municipal service, dreams that he is standing guard in the street, which is a wish-fulfilment. An inspector approaches him, wearing the number 22 and 62, or 26, on his gorget. In any event, there had been several twos on it. The very division of the number 2262 when the dream is recounted suggests that the components have separate meanings. It occurs to him that yesterday at the office they had been discussing the duration of their service. The occasion was provided by an inspector who had retired at the age of 62. The dreamer has completed only 22 years of service and still needs 2 years and 2 months to qualify for a 90 percent pension. The dream now presents him first with the fulfilment of a long-cherished wish, the rank of inspector. The superior with 2262 on his collar is he himself; he is performing his duty in the street, also a favorite wish, has completed his 2 years and 2 months, and can now leave the service with a full pension, like the 62-year-old inspector (160).”

III. Un autre exemple nous présente l’art de calculer du rêve, qui lui a valu tant de mépris. Un homme rêve : Il est assis chez les B. (une famille qu’il connaissait autrefois) et dit : Ce fut une sottise de ne pas m’avoir donné Mali. Puis il demande à la jeune fille : Quel âge avez-vous donc ? Réponse : Je suis née en 1882. Ah, alors vous avez 28 ans.

Comme le rêve a lieu en 1898, le calcul est manifestement mauvais, et la faiblesse de calcul du rêveur peut être placée à côté de celle du paralytique, si elle ne peut s’expliquer autrement. Mon patient appartenait à ces personnes dont les pensées ne laissent en paix aucune femme qu’elles voient. Pendant plusieurs mois, la patiente qui lui succédait régulièrement dans mon cabinet fut une jeune dame qu’il rencontrait, au sujet de laquelle il s’informait souvent et envers laquelle il tenait absolument à se montrer courtois. C’est elle dont il estimait l’âge à 28 ans. Voilà pour l’explication du résultat du calcul apparent. Mais 1882 était l’année où il s’était marié. Il n’avait pas non plus pu s’empêcher d’engager la conversation avec les deux autres personnes de sexe féminin qu’il rencontrait chez moi, les deux jeunes filles nullement juvéniles qui lui ouvraient la porte à tour de rôle ; et, comme il les trouvait peu familières, il s’était expliqué leur attitude en supposant qu’elles devaient le tenir pour un monsieur d’un certain âge, « posé ».

Calculer et parler dans le rêve.

IV. Je dois à M. B. Dattner un autre rêve de nombres, ainsi que son interprétation, qui se distingue par une détermination transparente ou, plutôt, par une surdétermination :

« Mon propriétaire, agent du service de sécurité employé par la municipalité, rêve qu’il monte la garde dans la rue, ce qui constitue un accomplissement de désir. Un inspecteur s’approche alors de lui ; il porte sur son hausse-col le numéro 22 et 62, ou bien 26. Il y avait en tout cas plusieurs chiffres 2. Le simple fait de scinder le nombre 2262 en rapportant le rêve permet de conclure que ses éléments ont une signification distincte. Il lui revient à l’esprit qu’hier, au bureau, ils ont parlé de la durée de leurs états de service. La cause en était un inspecteur parti à la retraite à l’âge de 62 ans. Le rêveur ne compte encore que 22 années de service et il lui faut encore 2 ans et 2 mois pour atteindre une pension de 90 %. Le rêve lui présente d’abord la réalisation d’un souhait longtemps caressé, le grade d’inspecteur. Le supérieur qui porte 2262 sur son col, c’est lui-même ; il accomplit son service dans la rue, autre souhait favori, a achevé ses 2 ans et 2 mois de service restants et peut désormais, comme l’inspecteur âgé de 62 ans, quitter son poste avec une pension complète (160). »
