Let us now gather together the characteristics of jokes that can be related to their formation in the unconscious. First and foremost there is the peculiar brevity of jokes, a feature that is not indispensable but is extraordinarily characteristic. When we first encountered it, we were inclined to see in it an expression of economizing tendencies, but we ourselves devalued this view through objections that readily suggested themselves. It now appears to us, rather, as a sign of the unconscious processing [p. 146] undergone by the joke-thought. For its counterpart in dreams, condensation, cannot be connected by us with any factor other than localization in the unconscious, and we must assume that the conditions for such condensations, which are absent from the preconscious, are present in the unconscious thought-process. [52] It is to be expected that, in the process of condensation, some of the elements subjected to it will be lost, while others, which take over their cathectic energy, will be strengthened by the condensation or built up to excessive strength. Thus the brevity of jokes, like that of dreams, would be a necessary concomitant of the condensations occurring in both, in each case a result of the process of condensation. The brevity of jokes would also owe to this origin its peculiar character, impossible to specify further but striking to our sensibility.
