One may also venture a conjecture about the mechanism of such sublimation. On the one hand, the sexual impulses of these childhood years would be unusable because the reproductive functions have been postponed, which constitutes the principal characteristic of the latency period. On the other hand, they would be perverse in themselves, that is, they would proceed from erogenous zones and be sustained by drives which, given the direction of the individual’s development, could produce only sensations of unpleasure. They therefore awaken opposing psychical forces (reactive impulses), which, for the effective suppression of such unpleasure, build up the psychical dams already mentioned: disgust, shame, and morality (41).
Interruptions of the Latency Period.
Without deceiving ourselves about the hypothetical nature and deficient clarity of our insight into the processes of the childhood period of latency or postponement, let us return to reality and state that such employment of infantile sexuality represents an educational ideal from which the development of individuals usually diverges at some point, and often to a considerable extent. From time to time, a portion of sexual manifestation that has escaped sublimation breaks through, or a sexual activity persists throughout the entire latency period until the sexual drive emerges with greater force at puberty. Educators, insofar as they pay any attention at all to childhood sexuality, behave exactly as if they shared our views about the formation of the moral defensive forces at the expense of sexuality and as if they knew that sexual activity makes the child ineducable, for they persecute all the child’s sexual manifestations as “vices,” though without being able to do much against them. We, however, have every reason to direct our interest toward these phenomena feared by education, for we expect them to elucidate the original configuration of the sexual drive.
