Object-choice, however, is at first carried out in imagination, and the sexual life of young people just reaching maturity has scarcely any scope other than to indulge in phantasies, that is, in ideas not intended to be put into effect (70). In these phantasies the infantile inclinations reappear in everyone, now reinforced by somatic pressure; and among them, with regular frequency and foremost, is the child’s sexual impulse toward the parents, usually already differentiated by sexual attraction: that of the son toward the mother and of the daughter toward the father (71). Simultaneously with the overcoming and repudiation of these distinctly incestuous phantasies, one of the most significant, but also one of the most painful, psychical achievements of puberty is accomplished: detachment from parental authority, through which alone is created the opposition between the new generation and the old that is so important for the progress of civilization. At every stage of the developmental course through which individuals are supposed to pass, a number of them are held back; thus there are also people who have never overcome parental authority and have not withdrawn their tenderness from their parents, or have done so only very incompletely. These are mostly girls who, to their parents’ delight, remain in the fullness of childhood love far beyond puberty; and it is then highly instructive to find that these girls, in their later marriages, lack the capacity to give their husbands what is due to them. They become frigid wives and remain sexually anaesthetic. From this we learn that apparently non-sexual love for one’s parents and sexual love are fed from the same sources, that is, that the former corresponds only to an infantile fixation of the libido.
