Nevertheless, one cannot maintain the view that the presence of the various components in the sexual constitution unambiguously determines the form sexual life will take. Rather, the determination continues, and further possibilities arise according to the fate undergone by the contributions of sexuality originating from the individual sources. This further elaboration is evidently what is ultimately decisive, while a constitution that is the same in descriptive terms can lead to three different outcomes. If all these dispositions persist in their relative proportions, assumed to be abnormal, and grow stronger with maturation, the final outcome can only be a perverse sexual life. The analysis of such abnormal constitutional dispositions has not yet been properly undertaken, but we already know cases that can readily be explained by such assumptions. The authors believe, for example, that a whole series of fixation perversions necessarily presuppose an innate weakness of the sexual instinct. In this form the proposition seems to me untenable; but it becomes meaningful if what is meant is a constitutional weakness in one factor of the sexual instinct, the genital zone, which later assumes as its function the unification of the individual sexual activities toward the aim of reproduction. The unification required at puberty must then fail, and the strongest of the other components of sexuality will enforce its activity as a perversion (75).
