(12) Die Psychoanalyse hat bisher zwar keine volle Aufklärung über die Herkunft der Inversion gebracht, aber doch den psychischen Mechanismus ihrer Entstehung aufgedeckt und die in Betracht kommenden Fragestellungen wesentlich bereichert. Wir haben bei allen untersuchten Fällen festgestellt, daß die später Invertierten in den ersten Jahren ihrer Kindheit eine Phase von sehr intensiver, aber kurzlebiger Fixierung an das Weib (meist an die Mutter) durchmachen, nach deren Überwindung sie sich mit dem Weib identifizieren und sich selbst zum Sexualobjekt nehmen, d. h. vom Narzißmus ausgehend jugendliche und der eigenen Person ähnliche Männer aufsuchen, die sie so lieben wollen, wie die Mutter sie geliebt hat. Wir haben ferner sehr häufig gefunden, daß angeblich Invertierte gegen den Reiz des Weibes keineswegs unempfindlich waren, sondern die durch das Weib hervorgerufene Erregung fortlaufend auf ein männliches Objekt transponierten. Sie wiederholten so während ihres ganzen Lebens den Mechanismus, durch welchen ihre Inversion entstanden war. Ihr zwanghaftes Streben nach dem Manne erwies sich als bedingt durch ihre ruhelose Flucht vor dem Weibe.

(12) Psychoanalysis has so far admittedly provided no complete explanation of the origin of inversion, but it has nevertheless uncovered the psychical mechanism of its development and substantially enriched the questions that must be considered. In every case examined, we have established that those who later become inverted pass through, during the first years of childhood, a phase of very intense but short-lived fixation upon a woman (usually the mother). After overcoming this phase, they identify themselves with the woman and take themselves as their sexual object, that is, proceeding from narcissism, they seek out young men resembling themselves whom they wish to love as their mother loved them. We have also very often found that persons who were allegedly inverted were by no means insensible to the attraction of women, but continually transposed the excitation aroused by a woman onto a male object. Thus, throughout their lives, they repeated the mechanism by which their inversion had arisen. Their compulsive striving after men proved to be conditioned by their restless flight from women.

(12) La psychanalyse n’a certes pas encore apporté d’explication complète sur l’origine de l’inversion, mais elle a néanmoins mis au jour le mécanisme psychique de sa genèse et considérablement enrichi les questions à prendre en considération. Nous avons constaté, dans tous les cas examinés, que les futurs invertis traversent, pendant les premières années de leur enfance, une phase de fixation très intense mais brève à la femme, le plus souvent à la mère; après l’avoir surmontée, ils s’identifient à la femme et se prennent eux-mêmes pour objet sexuel, c’est-à-dire que, partant du narcissisme, ils recherchent des hommes jeunes et semblables à leur propre personne, qu’ils veulent aimer comme leur mère les a aimés. Nous avons en outre très souvent constaté que des personnes prétendument inverties n’étaient nullement insensibles à l’attrait de la femme, mais transposaient continuellement sur un objet masculin l’excitation provoquée par la femme. Elles répétaient ainsi, durant toute leur vie, le mécanisme par lequel leur inversion était née. Leur quête compulsive de l’homme se révélait conditionnée par leur fuite incessante devant la femme.
