I still have no idea for what purpose I established this relation, against which I must continually struggle. It is not very profound, after all, for my uncle was a criminal, while my friend R. is blameless, apart, perhaps, from being punished for knocking down an apprentice boy with his bicycle. Could I mean this misdeed? That would make the comparison ridiculous. But now another conversation occurs to me, one I had a few days ago with another colleague, N., and indeed on the same subject. I met N. in the street. He too has been proposed for a professorship, knew of the honor bestowed on me, and congratulated me upon it. I rejected this firmly. “You of all people should not make this joke, since you have experienced the value of such a proposal in your own case.” He then said, probably not seriously: “One cannot know. There is, after all, something particular against me. Do you not know that a person once lodged a complaint against me in court? I need not assure you that the investigation was discontinued. It was a base attempt at extortion; I even had the greatest difficulty in saving the complainant herself from punishment. But perhaps the ministry is using this matter against me so as not to appoint me. But you, you are blameless.” There, then, I have the criminal, and at the same time the interpretation and tendency of my dream. My Uncle Josef represents for me both colleagues who were not appointed professors, the one as a simpleton and the other as a criminal. I now know as well why I need this representation. If “denominational” considerations are decisive in delaying the appointments of my friends R. and N., then my own appointment is also in question. But if I can attribute the rejection of the two men to other reasons that do not apply to me, my hope remains undisturbed. This is how my dream proceeds: it makes the one, R., a simpleton, and the other, N., a criminal. But I am neither one nor the other. What we have in common has been abolished, I may rejoice in my appointment as professor, and I have escaped the distressing application to my own person that I would have had to make from R.’s report of what the high official had told him.
