– Was soll das heißen?

I want to give a supper, but I have nothing on hand except some smoked salmon. I think of going shopping, but remember that it is Sunday afternoon, when all the shops are closed. I then try to telephone several suppliers, but the telephone is out of order. Thus I must abandon my wish to give a supper.”

I naturally reply that only analysis can decide the meaning of this dream, although I concede that at first sight it appears reasonable and coherent and resembles the opposite of a wish fulfillment. “But from what material did this dream arise? You know that the stimulus for a dream invariably lies in the experiences of the preceding day.”

Analysis: The patient’s husband, an upright and capable wholesale butcher, told her the day before that he was becoming too fat and therefore intended to begin a reducing regimen. He would rise early, take exercise, keep to a strict diet, and above all accept no more invitations to supper. She laughingly continues her account of her husband: at his regular table he had made the acquaintance of a painter who was determined to paint his portrait, because he had never encountered such an expressive head. Her husband, however, had replied in his blunt manner that he was much obliged, but was quite convinced that the painter would prefer a piece of a beautiful young girl’s backside to his entire face (49). She is now very much in love with her husband and teases him playfully. She has also asked him not to give her any caviar. What can that mean?

For a long time she has wished that she could eat a caviar roll every morning, but she does not allow herself the expense. Of course, she would receive the caviar from her husband at once if she asked him for it. Instead, however, she has asked him not to give her any caviar, so that she can tease him about it for longer.

(This explanation seems flimsy to me. Unacknowledged motives are usually concealed behind such unsatisfactory accounts. One may recall Bernheim’s hypnotized subjects, who carry out a posthypnotic instruction and, when questioned about their motives, do not answer, “I do not know why I did that,” but instead feel compelled to invent an obviously inadequate explanation. Something similar is probably true of my patient’s caviar. I observe that she is compelled to create an unfulfilled wish for herself in real life. Her dream also shows her the refusal of a wish as having come to pass. But why does she need an unfulfilled wish?)

(Cette justification me paraît spécieuse.
