Identification is used most frequently in hysteria to express a sexual commonality. In her symptoms, the hysterical woman identifies herself most readily, though not exclusively, with people with whom she has had sexual relations, or who have sexual relations with the same people as she does. Language likewise takes account of such a conception. Two lovers are “one.” In hysterical phantasy, as in dreams, it is enough for identification that sexual relations should be thought of, without their therefore having to be regarded as real. The patient is thus merely following the rules of hysterical processes of thought when she expresses her jealousy of her friend, which she herself recognizes as unjustified, by putting herself in her friend’s place in the dream and identifying herself with her by creating a symptom, the unfulfilled wish. One might further elucidate the process in words as follows: in the dream she puts herself in her friend’s place because her friend is taking her place with her husband, and because she would like to take her friend’s place in her husband’s esteem (50).
