I cannot give so detailed a resolution of the second scene of the dream, out of regard for the censorship. For here I put myself in the place of a great lord of that revolutionary period who is also said to have had an adventure with an eagle, to have suffered from incontinentia alvi, and so forth; and I believe I would not be entitled to pass the censorship here, although an Aulic Councillor (Aula, consiliarius aulicus) told me the greater part of those stories. The series of rooms in the dream was suggested by His Excellency’s saloon carriage, into which I was able to glance for a moment; but, as so often in dreams, it signifies women’s rooms, or women (women belonging to the Treasury). In the person of the housekeeper, I make a poor return to a witty older lady for the hospitality and the many good stories offered to me in her house. The feature involving the lamp goes back to Grillparzer, who recorded a charming experience of similar content and afterward used it in Hero and Leander (The Waves of Sea and Love, the Armada and the storm) (75).
