Furthermore, since experience in dream analysis has drawn my attention to the fact that even dreams whose interpretation at first appears complete, because their dream-sources and wish-instigators are easily demonstrable, give rise to important threads of thought reaching back into earliest childhood, I have had to ask myself whether this feature, too, does not constitute an essential condition of dreaming. If I were permitted to generalize this thought, every dream would have in its manifest content a point of connection with recent experience, but in its latent content a point of connection with the earliest experience, which, in the analysis of hysteria, I can in fact show to have remained, in a valid sense, recent down to the present. This conjecture, however, still appears very difficult to prove; I shall have to return in another context (Section VII) to the probable role of the earliest childhood experiences in the formation of dreams.

Of the three peculiarities of dream memory considered at the outset, one, the preference for the incidental in the dream-content, has been satisfactorily explained by tracing it back to dream-distortion. We have been able to confirm the other two, the prominence of both the recent and the infantile, but have not been able to derive them from the motives of dreaming. Let us keep in mind these two characteristics, whose explanation or utilization remains outstanding; they will have to find their place elsewhere, either in the psychology of the state of sleep or in those considerations concerning the structure of the psychical apparatus that we shall undertake later, when we have noticed that through dream-interpretation one can, as though through a narrow opening in a window, obtain a glimpse into its interior.

But I wish to emphasize here at once another result of the latest dream analyses. The dream often appears to have more than one meaning; not only can several wish-fulfilments, as examples show, be combined side by side within it, but one meaning or wish-fulfilment may also conceal another until, at the very bottom, one comes upon the fulfilment of a wish from earliest childhood. And here again arises the question whether the word "often" in this sentence might not more correctly be replaced by "regularly" (78).
