d) Typical Dreams.

In general, we are unable to interpret another person’s dream if that person is unwilling to surrender to us the unconscious thoughts lying behind the dream-content, and this severely impairs the practical applicability of our method of dream interpretation. Yet, in marked contrast to the freedom otherwise enjoyed by the individual to furnish the world of his dreams with his own individual peculiarities and thereby make it inaccessible to the understanding of others, there is a certain number of dreams that almost everyone has dreamed in the same way and that we are accustomed to assume have the same meaning for everyone. A special interest attaches to these typical dreams also because they presumably arise from the same sources in all people and thus seem particularly well suited to provide us with information about the sources of dreams.

We shall therefore approach the attempt to apply our technique of dream interpretation to these typical dreams with very special expectations, and we shall be most reluctant to admit that our art proves inadequate precisely with this material. In interpreting typical dreams, the dreamer’s associations, which otherwise have guided us toward an understanding of the dream, generally fail, or else they become obscure and insufficient, so that we cannot solve our task with their help.

Why this is so and how we can remedy this deficiency in our technique will become apparent at a later point in our work. The reader will then also understand why I can treat only a few dreams from the group of typical dreams here and postpone discussion of the others until that later context.
