Ich will also wieder einmal Professor werden!

In continuing the analysis, it occurs to me that Basedow is not only the name of a physician but also that of a famous educationalist. (While awake, I do not now feel entirely certain of this knowledge.) But my friend Otto is the person whom I have asked, in case anything should happen to me, to supervise the physical education of my children, especially at puberty (hence the nightshirt). By seeing my friend Otto in the dream with the symptoms of that noble helper’s illness, I evidently mean to say: If anything happens to me, as little will be obtained from him for the children as was obtained then from Baron L., despite his amiable offers. The egoistic element of this dream should now have been uncovered (98).

But where is the wish-fulfilment here? Not in revenge upon my friend Otto, whose fate it simply is to be treated badly in my dreams, but in the following connection. By representing Otto as Baron L. in the dream, I have at the same time identified myself with another person, namely Professor R., for I am asking something of Otto just as, in that incident, R. asked something of Baron L. And that is the point. Professor R., like me, pursued his path independently outside the school and attained only in later years the title he had long deserved. So once again I want to become a professor! Indeed, even the phrase “in later years” is a wish-fulfilment, for it signifies that I shall live long enough to guide my boys through puberty myself.
