From my attempts to construct dreams synthetically out of the dream-thoughts, I know that the material yielded by interpretation is of varying value. One part of it consists of the essential dream-thoughts, which thus fully replace the dream and would by themselves suffice as a substitute for it if there were no censorship of dreams. The other part may be grouped under the name “collaterals”; taken together, they represent the paths by which the actual wish arising from the dream-thoughts is transformed into the dream-wish. A first portion of these “collaterals” consists of connections with the dream-thoughts proper which, viewed schematically, correspond to displacements from what is essential to what is incidental. A second portion comprises the thoughts that connect with one another these incidental materials which have become significant through displacement, and extend from them to the dream-content. Finally, a third portion contains the associations and connections of thought by which, in the work of interpretation, one passes from the dream-content to the intermediate collaterals, and which need not necessarily all have participated in the formation of the dream.

At this point we are interested exclusively in the essential dream-thoughts. These usually reveal themselves as a complex of thoughts and memories of the most intricate construction, possessing all the characteristics of the trains of thought familiar to us from waking life. Not infrequently they are trains of thought proceeding from more than one center, yet not lacking points of contact; almost invariably, alongside one train of thought stands its contradictory counterpart, connected with it by association through contrast.

The individual parts of this complicated structure naturally stand in the most diverse logical relations to one another. They form foreground and background, digressions and explanations, conditions, chains of proof, and objections. When the entire mass of these dream-thoughts is then subjected to the pressure of the dream-work, during which the parts are turned, broken into fragments, and pressed together, rather like drifting ice, the question arises as to what becomes of the logical bonds that had hitherto formed the structure. What representation is given in dreams to “if, because, just as, although, either-or,” and all the other conjunctions without which we cannot understand a sentence or discourse?
