She wishes to pay for something; her daughter takes 3 fl. 65 kr. from her purse; but she says: What are you doing? It costs only 21 kr. This fragment of the dream was intelligible to me from the dreamer’s circumstances, without further explanation on her part. The lady was a foreigner who had placed her daughter in a Viennese educational institute and could continue my treatment for as long as her daughter remained in Vienna. In three weeks the girl’s school year was to end, and with it the treatment would end as well. On the day before the dream, the headmistress of the institute had suggested to her that she might decide to leave the child with her for another year. She had then evidently continued this suggestion in her own mind to the effect that, in that case, she could also extend the treatment by one year. This is what the dream refers to, for one year equals 365 days, while the three weeks remaining until the end of the school year and the treatment can be replaced by 21 days (although there were not as many treatment hours). The numbers that represented periods of time in the dream-thoughts are attached to monetary values in the dream, not without a deeper meaning thereby being expressed, for “Time is money,” time has monetary value. 365 kreuzer are, of course, 3 gulden 65 kreuzer. The smallness of the sums appearing in the dream is an obvious wish-fulfilment; the wish has reduced the cost of the treatment as well as of the school year at the institute.

II. The numbers in another dream lead to more complicated relations. A young lady who has nevertheless already been married for a number of years learns that an acquaintance almost exactly her own age, Elise L., has just become engaged. Thereupon she dreams: She is sitting in the theatre with her husband; one side of the stalls is completely empty. Her husband tells her that Elise L. and her fiancé had also wished to go, but had obtained only bad seats, 3 for 1 fl. 50 kr., and of course they could not take those. She thinks it would not have been any great misfortune either.
