If we return once more to the proposition that the dream-work likes to make use of a fantasy found ready-made instead of first assembling one from the material of the dream-thoughts, this insight may perhaps solve one of the interesting riddles of dreams. On p. 20 I related Maury’s dream in which, struck on the back of the neck by a small board, he awoke from a long dream, a complete novel set in the period of the great Revolution. Since the dream is reported as coherent and is entirely designed to explain the stimulus that awakened him, whose arrival the sleeper could not have anticipated, the only assumption apparently remaining is that the whole rich dream must have been composed and experienced in the brief interval between the board’s striking Maury’s cervical vertebrae and his awakening under the compulsion of the blow. We would not venture to ascribe such rapidity to waking thought-work, and thus came to grant the dream-work, as a privilege, a remarkable acceleration of its course.
