For, to apply this answer with any tolerable sense to our present purpose, it must signify one of these two things: either that as soon as men come to the use of reason these supposed native inscriptions come to be known and observed by them; or else, that the use and exercise of men’s reason, assists them in the discovery of these principles, and certainly makes them known to them.

Je répons à cela, Que des expreſſions ambiguës qui ne ſignifient preſque rien, paſſent pour des raiſons évidentes dans l’Eſprit de ceux qui pleins de quelque préjugé, ne prennent pas la peine d’examiner avec aſſez d’application ce qu’ils diſent pour défendre leur propre ſentiment. C’eſt ce qui paroît évidemment dans cette occaſion. Car pour donner à la Réponſe que je viens de propoſer, un ſens tant ſoit peu raiſonnable par rapport à la Queſtion que nous avons en main, on ne peut lui faire ſignifier que l’une ou l’autre de ces deux choſes, ſavoir, qu’auſſi-tôt que les Hommes viennent à faire uſage de la Raiſon, ils apperçoivent ces Principes qu’on ſuppoſe être imprimez naturellement dans l’Eſprit, ou bien, que l’uſage de la Raiſon les leur fait découvrir & connoître avec certitude. Or ceux à qui j’ai à faire, ne ſauroient montrer par aucune de ces deux choſes qu’il y ait des Principes innez.
