I shall begin with the simple idea of SPACE. I have showed above, chap. 4, that we get the idea of space, both by our sight and touch; which, I think, is so evident, that it would be as needless to go to prove that men perceive, by their sight, a distance between bodies of different colours, or between the parts of the same body, as that they see colours themselves: nor is it less obvious, that they can do so in the dark by feeling and touch.

Je commencerai par l’idée ſimple de l’Eſpace. J’ai déja montré dans le Chapitre Quatriéme de ce Second Livre, que nous acquérons l’idée de l’Eſpace & par la vûë & par l’attouchement, ce qui eſt, ce me ſemble, d’une telle évidence, qu’il ſeroit auſſi inutile de prouver que les hommes apperçoivent, par la vûë, la diſtance qui eſt entre des Corps de diverſes couleurs, ou entre les parties du même Corps, qu’il ſeroit de prouver qu’ils voyent les couleurs mêmes. Il n’eſt pas moins aiſé de ſe convaincre que l’on peut appercevoir l’Eſpace dans les ténèbres par le moyen de l’attouchement.
