But however it be in knowledge, I think I may truly say, it is OF FAR LESS, OR NO USE AT ALL IN PROBABILITIES. For the assent there being to be determined by the preponderancy, after due weighing of all the proofs, with all circumstances on both sides, nothing is so unfit to assist the mind in that as syllogism; which running away with one assumed probability, or one topical argument, pursues that till it has led the mind quite out of sight of the thing under consideration; and, forcing it upon some remote difficulty, holds it fast there; entangled perhaps, and, as it were, manacled, in the chain of syllogisms, without allowing it the liberty, much less affording it the helps, requisite to show on which side, all things considered, is the greater probability.

Mais quel que ſoit l’uſage du Syllogiſme dans ce qui regarde la Connoiſſance, je croi pouvoir dire avec vérité qu’il eſt beaucoup moins utile, ou plûtôt qu’il n’eſt abſolument d’aucun uſage dans les Probabilitez, car l’aſſentiment devant être déterminé dans les choſes probables par le plus grand poids des preuves, après qu’on les a dûement examinées de part & d’autre dans toutes leurs circonſtances, rien n’eſt moins propre à aider l’Eſprit dans cet examen que le Syllogiſme, qui muni d’une ſeule probabilité ou d’un ſeul argument topique ſe donne carriére, & pouſſe cet Argument dans ſes derniers confins, juſqu’à ce qu’il ait entraîné l’Eſprit hors de la vûë de la choſe en queſtion ; de ſorte que le forçant, pour ainſi dire, à la faveur de quelque difficulté éloignée, il le tient là fortement attaché, & peut-être même embrouillé & entrelaſſé dans une chaine de Syllogiſmes, ſans lui donner la liberté de conſiderer de quel côté ſe trouve la plus grande probabilité, après que toutes ont été dûement examinées ; tant s’en faut qu’il lui fourniſſe les ſecours capables de s’en inſtruire.
