53. Warum heute Atheismus? - „Der Vater“ in Gott ist gründlich widerlegt; ebenso „der Richter“, „der Belohner“. Insgleichen sein „freier Wille“: er hört nicht, - und wenn er hörte, wüsste er trotzdem nicht zu helfen. Das Schlimmste ist: er scheint unfähig, sich deutlich mitzutheilen: ist er unklar? - Dies ist es, was ich, als Ursachen für den Niedergang des europäischen Theismus, aus vielerlei Gesprächen, fragend, hinhorchend, ausfindig gemacht habe; es scheint mir, dass zwar der religiöse Instinkt mächtig im Wachsen ist, - dass er aber gerade die theistische Befriedigung mit tiefem Misstrauen ablehnt.

53. Why atheism today? “The father” in God has been thoroughly refuted, likewise “the judge,” “the rewarder.” So too his “free will”: he does not hear, and if he did hear, he would nevertheless not know how to help. The worst thing is that he seems incapable of communicating clearly: is he obscure? This is what I have discovered, as the causes of the decline of European theism, from conversations of many kinds, questioning and listening closely. It seems to me that the religious instinct is indeed growing powerfully, but that it rejects precisely theistic satisfaction with deep mistrust.

53. Pourquoi l’athéisme aujourd’hui ? « Le Père » en Dieu est radicalement réfuté, de même que « le juge », « celui qui récompense ». Pareillement son « libre arbitre » : il n’entend pas, et s’il entendait, il ne saurait pourtant pas aider. Le pire est qu’il semble incapable de se communiquer clairement : est-il obscur ? Voilà ce que, questionnant et tendant l’oreille, j’ai découvert au fil de multiples conversations comme causes du déclin du théisme européen. Il me semble que l’instinct religieux connaît certes une puissante croissance, mais qu’il rejette précisément avec une profonde méfiance la satisfaction théiste.
