58. Was man versprechen kann.

58. What One Can Promise. One can promise actions, but not feelings, for these are involuntary. Whoever promises someone always to love him or always to hate him or always to be faithful to him promises something that is not in his power. He can, however, promise such actions as are usually the consequences of love, hatred, or fidelity, but which can also spring from other motives, for several paths and motives lead to an action. The promise always to love someone therefore means: for as long as I love you, I shall show you the actions of love; if I no longer love you, you shall nevertheless continue to receive the same actions from me, though from other motives, so that in the minds of our fellow human beings the appearance will remain that love is unchanged and still the same. Thus one promises the persistence of the appearance of love when, without self-delusion, one vows everlasting love to someone.
