106. At the waterfall. At the sight of a waterfall, we think we see freedom of the will and caprice in the countless bends, windings, and breakings of the waves; but everything is necessary, every movement can be calculated mathematically. So it is also with human actions; one would have to be able to calculate every individual action in advance if one were omniscient, and likewise every advance in knowledge, every error, every act of malice. The person acting is admittedly caught in the illusion of arbitrariness; if at one moment the wheel of the world stood still and an omniscient, calculating intellect were there to make use of this pause, it could relate the future of every being down to the most distant times and indicate every track along which that wheel will yet roll. The acting person's deception about himself, the assumption of free will, is itself included in this calculable mechanism.
