194. The Fools of Modern Culture. The fools of medieval courts correspond to our feuilletonists. They are the same kind of people: half-rational, witty, extravagant, silly, sometimes present merely to soften the pathos of the mood with conceits and chatter, and to drown out with clamour the excessively heavy, solemn pealing of great events. Formerly they served princes and nobles, now they serve parties (just as a considerable portion of the old submissiveness in the people’s dealings with princes still survives in party spirit and party discipline). The entire modern literary profession, however, stands very close to the feuilletonists. They are the “fools of modern culture,” whom one judges more leniently if one regards them as not entirely responsible for their actions. To regard writing as a lifelong profession should, in fairness, count as a kind of madness.
