452. Possession and Justice. When the socialists demonstrate that the distribution of property among present-day humanity is the consequence of countless injustices and acts of violence, and in sum reject any obligation toward something so unjustly founded, they see only one isolated thing. The entire past of ancient culture is built upon violence, slavery, fraud, and error; but we cannot simply decree away ourselves, the heirs of all these conditions, indeed the concretions of that entire past, nor may we seek to extract one single piece. The unjust disposition resides in the souls of the propertyless too; they are no better than the property owners and possess no moral prerogative, for at some time their ancestors were property owners. What is needed is not violent redistribution, but gradual transformations of the disposition; justice must grow greater in everyone, and the violent instinct weaker.
