187. The Ancient World and Joy. The people of the ancient world knew better how to rejoice; we know better how to grieve less. With all their wealth of ingenuity and reflection, they continually discovered new occasions to feel well and celebrate festivals, whereas we apply our minds to solving problems that aim more at freedom from pain and the removal of sources of displeasure. With regard to suffering existence, the ancients sought to forget or somehow bend sensation toward the pleasant, so that in this respect they sought to help palliatively, whereas we attack the causes of suffering and generally prefer to act prophylactically. Perhaps we are merely building the foundations upon which later human beings will once again erect the temple of joy.
